Hey... I have written before in the DAT section, but I'm going to try it here as well. I sent in my app May 30 and my GPA just came available today on the AADSAS site. Here are my stats

Undergrad GPA = 2.9 Biology/General Management
Graduate GPA = 3.6 Biology
Cum GPA = 3.02 Overall
DAT:
Bio = 20
Chem = 19
GChem = 16
Sci = 18
RC=21
QR=15
AA=18
PAT=18

I have 2.5 yrs of research experience (1.5 at a pretty prestigious cancer institute) (graduated grad school in 2004)
I have observed a few dentists in excess of 60hrs
I have 1 publication as first author and 4 abstracts for my research

Schools Applied: Buffalo, VCU, Howard, NYU, UMD, Temple, Meharry, Louisville, BU, Tufts, U Pitt

What do you guys think? THANKS in advance for your input! 👍 🙂 👎

that's a tough call...you've obviously got great experiences and your DAT scores aren't bad. have you taken the DAT just once? are you applying to Meharry and Howard as a minority? that will help your chances. i don't know which schools on your list will appreciate the research more, but they'll all like it. your grad gpa looks good too. i'd say you stand a pretty good chance.

sugar and salt make a great combo...

I would say you have fairly good chance of getting into one of those schools you listed based upon your graduate degree. Otherwise you look very mediocore as far as overall gpa(which is on low side) and the average dat score. 18 is actually the national average now.

Apply early and you might have really good chances

hey, not to hijack the thread but I have a 3.2 gpa all-around. Do I have a shot at an interview at Buffalo if I'm out of state? I also didn' do great in high school, so I don't know how they would look at that.

Thanks guys.

to the OP, nyu, temple, tufts and BU seem like the 4 you'd want to apply to that would give you the best shot. good luck.

where is your graduate degree from?

Hmmm. I have heard from a very reliable source, that UB over the past few years has really only considered people over 3.1 GPA unless your DAT scores are 20+. You have a 3.2, but UB's requirements aren't as strict as many state schools on residency. The average I have been told recently by enrollees at Buffalo has been 3.6. 1700 applied last year for 85 seats. However, I was advised with my current stats to take the DAT again, score 20 or above, and then I would be more carefully considered. Overall, I think Buffalo is a great dental school (one of the best) and is very fair in their selection, so with a 3.2 and decent DAT scores + experience in dentistry, research, good LORs etc, I think you may have an allright shot at scoring an interview at least. That is just from what I inferred from the person I spoke with. I'm no pro at this either, so don't bank on my words. PM me if you have more questions. I live in Buffalo and met with admissions. I have heard also that the passing rate when people from UB take the boards usually very high. This, I would think, is indicative of a very good school. I wish my undergrad stats were more competitive. 😳

I received my Master's Degree in 2004 from Virginia Commonwealth University. It was a wonderful school! I think I did better because I finally had the fresh start I was looking for...and with all the research, I had to learn to budget my time better for studying. Made me more efficient and less of a procrastinator!

Lets hope your state school would take you. Retake the DAT if you can to raise your QR and OC scores.
