Ok heres my situation. I'm the defination of a non-traditional student. My first year or so of college I completly waisted my time (and money) and have been fighting an uphill battle ever since. I actually quit school for a few years and went to work.

2 years ago I decided to go back to school and have really done well (3.8 gpa since returning). The problem is my overall gpa was a .91 when I went back and now I have brought it up to a 2.9. I am 3 classes away from a BA in Management and I would have to take about a year of classes to have the prerequisites covered for pre-dental.

My question is does someone like me have a chance at getting accepted to dental school, or is this too little too late? Thanks in advance.

Did you get a 3.8 each year for the last 3 years. If so that is definitely impressive and admissions committees will look favorably upon you for having improved so much. I wouldn't be afraid to apply to dental school in your situation. Whether or not you are late for this application cycle remains to be seen, but I've heard of people still applying in January and getting accepted. It's up to you. Good luck with whatever decision you make. :luck:

If you haven't taken any science prereqs, it is going to be like a fresh start. If your overall GPA is a bit low but your science GPA and BCP(prereq) GPA is very high you may get treated by some adcoms as somebody with no blemishes.

The GPA that adcoms go by are the ones calculated by AADSAS. It can do some funny things with your GPA if part of it goes a few years back, like put less weigh on it.

my overall GPA since returning to school has been a 3.8 and that has allowed me to bring my total GPA up to a 2.9. If I get all A's in my last semester I have a shot at a 3.0. Keep in mind that I still have to knock out all the science requirements for D school which should take me about 2 full semesters, so I can bring my GPA up even more. I'm just overwhelmed a little because of how poorly my first year and a half of school was, and am wondering if I even have a shot. Thanks for the reply.

Great! You are in better shape than people who have taken the prereqs but have a lousy GPA.

My experience with AADSAS has been different. I had a similar situation as the OP and had several semesters where my GPA stunk...horribly. I was in the workforce for over 15 years before deciding to go back. Since returning four years ago, my GPA has never been lower than 3.8. AADSAS, however, still calculates the earlier semesters as if I had taken them yesterday. According to AADSAS, I'm only a 3.29.

To the OP, seek out schools that take your educational trend into consideration and don't just weed you out by your AADSAS GPA. (PM me if you want some of the info I've gathered.) I'd also recommend you address this issue up front in your personal statement. I've done both of these things and have had 2 interviews this cycle. If you want it, go for it! Show the adcoms what you have learned from this experience and how you have grown as an individual. Not every road is straight but if you stick with it and are determined to succeed you can end up at the same destination.

I really appreciate the vote of confidence, I can't tell you all how many times I've kicked my self for being such a flake when I started school. I now have the maturity and drive to make it happen, I just wasn't sure if I was too far behind the curve, thanks.
