I just got my cdat scores back and here is my ****ty score:

reading 18
bio 18
chem 17
pat 19
carving 13 😡!!!!

and my GPA is:
1st year 3.3
2nd year 3.7
3rd year 4.0

what should i do???????????????

I would say your GPA is great, but your DAT is a bit low. I'm Canadian (that you have carving score indicates you're also Canadian) as well, although I am at US college now, and I know how ridiculously difficult it is to get into Canadian dental school (UBC, UofT, McGill) because there are so few of them. For US Dental Schools, if you have decent EC and do better on your DAT, you definately are going to get interviews and likely to get admissions.

Just out of curiosity.... What is 'carving'?

Do you actually carve something?????????

Yea, you are given a bar of soap and a blade and you have to carve the soap into some random figure they give you.

Don't worry about it.

any advise on what i should do? would you retake the dat?

thanks,

It's your call. Your high GPA in a way covers a little bit of the average DAT that you got. If you want to maximize your chances then retake the DAT and aim for 20s. You can still get in with those scores though. If you had weaker GPA then I would have definitely told you to retake.

You need to contact the schools you are interested in applying to - "dont worry about it" is not good advice! You should worry about it because it is possibly something that could keep you out of the school you want to go to. I dont know much about the carving score, but most schools wont accept a score from any one subject below a 15 or 16 (just depends on the school), but there are always exceptions, and maybe that doesnt apply to carving. If you were to retake the DAT I have been told that some schools will take your best score in each section from the two tests. Basically that means you would only need to improve on the carving section, but again that varries from school to school. Your GPA is excellent which you should be proud of - I highly advise you to contact every school you are thinking of applying to and explain your situation (be sure to include your GPA as this may affect their decision) and get their advice.

I think he has a chance but he is not in an optimal situation. People with 17-18 and high GPAs have gotten in. Its not quite obvious as to whether he should retake it or not. Its worthwhile to talk to the schools to see what they say.
