Do I have to complete all my prereqs before applying to pharmacy school?

Hello all. I'm planning to apply to schools the next application cycle, but I will be missing a few prereqs once I apply. I'll be missing 4-5 prereqs, depending on the school. OChem2, Physics2, Microbio, Biochem, and Eng2 are some of the prereqs I won't have completed till next Fall. I want to apply for Fall 2011 and I'm afraid this might hurt my application.

It shouldn't hurt your application as most pharmacy schools only require you to complete all you pre reqs by the spring prior to starting pharmacy school. You need to check each school's requirements as some even allow you to complete your last pre req's by summer.

If you're that close, why aren't you applying now? Just curious.

You can use the search function to answer this question. Most schools require that you complete the pre-reqs prior to admissions in the fall. I know in Texas I have until Summer II to complete my pre-reqs. You can go ahead and apply to pharmacy schools assuming that you will complete your pre-reqs prior to matriculation as this will be contingent on your completion of those courses.

As long as the prereqs are completed by the time you begin pharmacy school you'll be okay although I imagine most schools will want to see some "proof" that you have a plan to get them done before that point.

Be careful; there are schools that do not allow ANY pre-reqs taken the summer prior to matriculation (ex: University of Illinois at Chicago). Always check each school individually to be sure.

I'll go one better than everyone, even the new LT.

Go to this page.

On each school, you'll see a field marked:

"Applicants must successfully complete ALL course prerequisites by the end of:" and then whatever term. Such as Summer 2010.

And now you can check every school without going to each school's individual web page.

I was wondering does having only a few pre-reqs completed hurt my chances of being accepted?

I would think it's more likely to hurt your PCAT scores, and thus your chances.

Man, they always make everything easier AFTER I'm done.

Kind of off topic but don't want to make a new thread...

Let's say I'm able to achieve a 3.5 gpa in my prerequisite classes and score around 80 on the PCAT. When applying to different schools, will previous years of non science courses in which I averaged around a 2.5 gpa have a substantial negative effect on my app?

I basically had some personal problems and didn't go to class. I failed 3 classes I think(none of them science). I'm sure they'll look at it and wonder, but I'm hoping an upward trend coinciding with harder science classes catches their eyes.

Yeah, the upward trend is what everyone looks for. What you should do is figure out, with a GPA calculator with lots of spaces, figure in a 2.5 gpa and then figure out a 3.5 for your pre-requisites and see what it ends up being, because that'll essentially be your PharmCAS GPA.

Thanks everyone! And thank you Passion4Sci, that page link really helped.
