i'm getting recommendation letter from
1) bio 199 (research professor)
2) Econ professor
3) Ochem professor
4) Dentist

Queston:
1)but I've heard that some school requires 3 LOR strictly from science professor. (what schools are they?)

2)is bio 199(research profeesor) counts as bio professor?

3)Do I really have to get LOR from another bio professor who taught me?

1. some do, check their websites. i know tufts and maryland specifically want a biochem and chem prof LOR (biochem counts as chem for maryland)
2. if they teach bio, yes.
3. not if you don't want to comply with certain schools requirements.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I don't understand why they are so specific. I could get two great letters form profs. who know me or two generic letters just because they are bio/chem professors.... Anyway, could a human physiology professor count as my biology letter??

I know OHSU requires 3 LOR from science professors

There's some difficult requirements out there for LORs. I believe there was 1 school that wanted a physics letter. wtf! The requirements didn't seem set in stone when I applied though.

If your app is stellar, they aren't going to hassle you about this. If you are borderline, follow the recommendations strictly.

I'm assuming your school doesn't have a pre-professional committee. If you do getting one from them would be the easiest way to fullfill the LOR requirements (the bare minimum anyways). For most schools, a committee letter is all that's needed.

Tufts changed their LOR requirements because it now reads:

Two letters of recommendation (one from a Biology professor and one from a Biochemistry, Chemistry, Math or Physics professor) or a pre-professional composite committee letter

Good luck!

So this post inspired me to check out Tufts site and I also saw that you need a letter from a dentist providing proof of at least 30 hours shadowing experience.

I work at a dental clinic as an oral health promoter- mostly public health and outreach work. When I have free time the dentists let me shadow/assist a little, but I don't have too many actual 'shadow' hours. Definitely not 30. Do you think that's okay since I work at a dental center or should I look for other shadow opportunities?

I don't think shadowing means you can't get paid while doing it. If you watch what a dentists does, pay or not, you're shadowing. Get a letter from them. Try to only include the actual hours where you were watching them though, not performing your own seperate function.

1. For the most part you will need AT LEAST 2 letters from science professors. Check out AADSAS application supplementary information page when it's available. That should tell ya.

2. It depends. I know for a fact UNLV doesn't view research as an actual class.

3. Again, it depends. It is best to call individual schools and ask.

Aw man that sucks. Now I have to "waste" a letter on a prof that I don't even know from first year when I could have submitted a WAY better letter from my supervisor at work.

I wonder if I could send the physics/math/chem letter separately...

I had a letters from Physics, Chem, and Spanish professors and one from a dentist.
