Do I have to smile ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering if I have to be smiling on the pics for med school? I have some good pictures but I'm pretty serious on them.

It all depends. I guess we would have to see some to really help. I think you should just have some of your fellow pre-meds that you know help you out with this one. I wouldn't think you should be required to smile. But, if you have a nice smile, why not show it off to the admissions peeps?

Edit: Insert pic....

What about this kind of serious? If so, I wouldn't.

This isn't a mug shot. Throughout this process schools are trying to decide if you are a good fit. Meaning the adcom clinicians and student members are going to try and decide if you are someone they would like to work with, socialize with, etc. Nobody likes someone too serious, and if you look happy and nice you do yourself a favor.

brucelee, you made me spit out my drink when I saw this cat photo! Thanks for a good laugh!

I agree with this. I'd take pictures until I got a good one smiling. You know, one that portrayed, "hey, he looks like a cool guy" and not one that portrayed, "that cocky sh** 'knows' he's going to get in."

Just kidding, but go with a smile.

I'm not sure where I heard this, but I heard that some schools want a passport picture only? Is this true? I have a lot of pictures, but I can't tell if they want like the "passport picture type" with like the pure white background.

make a face like you're smelling a fart

Wait, do all schools require pictures?

Funny you mention that... when I was getting help from my professor, I noticed the profile pictures of the summer research students were laying on her desk and I couldn't help but notice one guy with a face just like you described.

At my med school, the picture was used for:
1.) The 'face-sheet' for all professors and small group leaders
2.) Our ID badge (which we wear every day 3rd and 4th year)
3.) Whether or not we get a good residency

Just kidding on the last one. In all honesty, it doesn't matter whether you're smiling or not. Just look professional and look like yourself. If you're a smiler in real life, go for it. 🙂

Would a graduation pic or just a pic of you in a suit and nice background suffice?
Or is this the OPPOSITE of what they're looking for (i.e. rather have a pic of you at the beach)?

Looks are everything.

Most schools ask for a passport sized photo. It doesn't literally have to be your passport photo.

My PP photo has me with much longer hair and a lot of facial hair. I did not submit this one. You can take a photo (or 50) at home, bring it to Ritz, and printout 15 passport sized photos for 5-10 bucks.

A picture with a smile will most likely have a more positive response than a stern one. People just respond better to smiles. It makes you appear friendlier and open.

Here's what you do:

1. Take a picture of yourself smiling
2. Photoshop the hell out of it to make it look like magazine material and nice/friendly
3. ???
4. Profit

3. Strip down to your underwear and do a dance.

Keep in mind that there's a psychological force behind smiling. By looking at the mouth and eyes of a person having a genuine smile, it can show the person's willingness, confidence, and most importantly, competence.

Who smiled in their passport photo you have to submit before you start?
