Hi, if I got a C- in a class, is that too low to register? I'm located in Texas and TMDSAS says anything below a C is not accepted, but I'm wondering if they do the +/- scale.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Yes, I think you have to retake. Last year was a disaster for me (2 C-'s and a D+), so I'm retaking all of those now. I would retake to to be on the safe side, or you can contact specific schools.

Also retaking and making a higher grade will show the ADCOMS that you fully understood the material.

As long as its not a pre-req, I don't think you need to retake it.

Good luck man! This was my only C- so I'm pissed off. I have a massive schedule this Summer and Fall and I don't know how I'm going to fit this extra class in now.

It is a pre-req unfortunately. I have A's in everything else except Gen Chem I. I was hoping I could register with a C- though

I would. Just to increase cGPA and show the ad coms that you can do good in the class, and that you just had a bad semester.

Unfortunately, some schools explicitly state that you need to get at least a C in all pre-req classes. While not all schools state this, its probably safer that you retake it. Can you move any of your summer/fall classes into the spring?

I could, but I will be graduating Spring 2014 and will be taking the MCAT in March as well. Most people have recommended that I don't take an extra class during Spring. I only need a free elective to finish my degree so I'm planning on taking an easy literature class during Spring 2014 while I study for the MCAT. But if I were to add something like Gen Chem, I think it would overwhelm me but I'm not sure

Unfortunately, you might not have a choice :/ At this point, you might want to call a few schools to see if they'd even accept a C- (I've read even on some DO websites that at least a C is required in all pre-reqs). If a few would accept a C-, then you can consider applying only to those schools. If you can take your pre-req over the summer or fall, and push back your easiest class to the Spring (the easiest class you would've otherwise taken in the fall or summer, that is), then you should be OK for the MCAT. Alternatively, you can consider pushing your MCAT back to May so that you aren't taking it during the school year. A May MCAT will be processed and added to your application by the end of June.

Yeah, I was incredibly pissed too, but it was of my own doing. I was not focused at all for 2 semesters (wasn't thinking about med school then; was leaning towards business, but took pre-med classes just in case I changed my mind). The only thing you can really do is forgive yourself, re-take, and move on. My biggest issue now is getting my sGPA up and some how proving to the ADCOM that I'm not stupid, despite my below-average GPA.

Only if your sure you can get an A!

1 C shouldn't hurt you as long as your GPA can recover.

If OP had gotten a C, he/she would not be in this situation. The issue at hand is that a C- (and yes, the minus is important) will literally NOT be accepted by some med schools. Some schools explicitly REQUIRE that you get at least a C in all pre-requisite classes.

So the reason that OP needs to retake has nothing to do with his/her sGPA, but the fact that some med schools will not accept a C- and will count it as the pre-requisite not being fulfilled.

Yes this is the problem unfortunately. I might just have to call each school in Texas to find out their grade acceptance.

Also I enjoyed your signature, it surprisingly made me calm down and not freak out.

TMDSAS does not use - and + I believe.
Thus your C- is a C. And that is all the schools will see.
