I am a Canadian citizen, but completed my undergrad in the US and completed my clinical volunteer and clinical shadowing hours in US health institutions.

Do I need to volunteer and shadow in Canada to have a good shot at Canadian med schools?

Also, unrelated question, for the autobiographical sketch on the OMSAS application, do they really want us to list everything we did in HS as well as in undergrad?

I know it's late, but the answer to your question is no.. Canadian medical schools care far less about ECs

They do not really care about ECs. Its necessary yes. But if you worked and saved a village from a burning fire in Africa is equal to volunteering at your local hospital. lol. But you could stand out during the interview because of the former.

A lot still do care about ECs, UofT has the autobiographical sketch and McMaster puts emphasis. Either way, during your interview you will be asked about your ECs at some schools.

The US should stand in fine I don't think you will have trouble with US volunteering and shadowing.

McMaster really does not care. ECs are not used in granting interviews, and it's not in the metric when giving acceptances. They do require applicants to list them but don't require verification information. You can just lie and it would not change your outcome.

They have to matter somewhat. I have a family friend who had a 36 MCAT and a 3.9 GPA with very limited ECs (I believe a summer of research thats it), didn't get interviews anywhere.

Its definitely looked at, its quite unfortunate that schools are so competitive that people lie about their ECs.

They care somewhat, but it's slight compared to the US. In the US they want to make sure there is clinical exposure, altruism, research etc... In Canada, you only need to show a few things and they needn't be that heavy.

I am sorry for your family friend. I do insist that they consider some small ECs and they would be fine.
