28 y/o nontrad student. Graduated with a double-BA in in psychology and studio art from a liberal arts college, and then taught English overseas for 4 years. At my university I took a women's studies course ("contemporary women playwrights") to satisfy my schools English requirement--it was one semester only. I also took a number of writing intensive philosophy and psychology courses, although there are no credits on my transcript specifically under ENG. I'm now in a postbacc fulfilling my science prereqs and I see that many med schools require or recommend 2 semesters of college English. Despite being a liberal arts, English-teacher non-trad, would I be well advised to take another English class? I don't want to waste my time and money on it at this point unless I have to as id be more interested to take recommended upper division science courses such as genetics instead.

I would email or call the medical schools you are interested in about the English requirement. If I were in your shoes, I would take the semester of English probably in the spring semester before matriculation (check if the school requires you to finish the prerequisites before applying or before matriculation). It's best to assume the worst case scenario in my opinion.

I got away having writing intensive courses on my transcript but only one labeled ENG. This should definitely work for schools that are vague, but for ones that specifically say English I agree I would email them to ask if x or y course on your transcript would satisfy

Thanks guys. It's an especially tough decision as I can take an overpriced introductory writing course this summer at a local university, but I also have a very exciting research internship going on this summer. The PI has been really welcoming in taking me under his wing, and has invited me to be as involved as I have time to be. I feel like I can get a lot more out of that experience if I'm not splitting my time between it and a BS writing class, but at the same time, I don't wanna forego the easiest timing I have to get something done that I need to do anyway.

You're right: i will call some admissions offices to get some more input
