I was wondering if anyone could let me know where I could find a price on diagnostic kits that are cheaper then allheart.com and steele.com. Also should i get a battery powered one or one with a plug in rechargeable battery ?? thanks

if you are talking about a pocket rocket- then go for the portability of battery powered- you never know when you will need it. 😀

You don't NEED a kit to get through medical school because in most rotations there are either wall-mounted units or a spare unit in the supply room that you can take into the room. If you are really stuck for one, you can always ask one of your fellow schmo students for one.

That said, I bought one and haven't regretted it - except when I lost my freaking recharger!!!!!!!! One day I was in the peds ER evaluating a kid for an otitis media and A) the unit in their room was broken; B) my otoscope had ran out of battery and I lost the recharger as mentioned before; and, C) amazingly no one else currently on had an otoscope handy at the time. This SUCKS. Eventually someone turned up with an otoscope, but it's a lot of angst you can avoid. Plus it's handy if you want to practice at home or "play doctor" with your significant other/random hot medical student. 😍 "Alright...now I'm looking at your ears...now your eyes...baby you have sexy optic discs..." ah, foreplay....

Oh and DEFINITELY go for the rechargeables - those things eat power like crazy.

If you do buy a kit, you certainly won't regret it later. Try www.ewelchallyn.com. It's the student site where they have pretty good student discounts if you are currently enrolled in medical school. (Although check with your school before purchasing...they may have a better deal negotiated than you can find on your own.)

And while they are a little pricier, the PanOptic is a great way to go and is the next generation of opthalmoscope. (But you may want to get both heads for only a little more so you know how to use both.)

www.scopesplus.com. They have some cheap Reister's sets. If you don't mind the jeers about how your kit would look weird cuz it's not Welch Allyn.
