GPA: I have 3.23 cGPA and 3.07 sGPA. I started out as a pre-med and seriously screwed up during sophomore and junior years. I've graduated already and took a year off working before coming back and taking more science classes in the same school. Combining the "post-bacc" course grades, the GPA will be 3.30/3.18 at the end of this semester. I plan to do another full year of classes before applying summer 2014, which will hopefully pull up the numbers to ~3.5/3.3.

ECs: Currently I'm working as interpreter/translator for a local humanitarian organization, and volunteering at Habitat for Humanity (once or twice a month). I just started working in a biophysics lab with prospects of getting something published under my name - I'm under a direct supervision of a post-doc in a lab without any graduate students. I plan to do some shadowing during the summer.

MCAT: I plan to take the test right before applying, and I will try to shoot for 30+.

Would I stand a chance? I saw in this forum something along the lines that the schools look at not just the grades but trend as well. For now, I do not think going to DO schools isn't worth considering.. Any inputs will be appreciated!

with a 3.5/3.3 GPA split...you'll need around a 35 on the MCAT to have a good shot at the MDs.

do note that i have a lot of friends with 3.3 sGPA who have gotten into very good MD schools with MCAT ranging from 33 to 37. however, they did have excellent ECs, and my alma mater ("top" northeast school) is known for grade deflation.

but there's definitely hope.

wait...does this mean that you are OPEN to DO schools, or NOT?

regardless...MD isn't out of the question for you if you can bump up that GPA and nail the MCAT.

If you can get the GPA up to 3.5, it's still below avg. for most schools, but not out of the question for MD.

Community volunteering is great! But do you have any clinical experience, volunteering or otherwise? That is a big thing for most adcoms.

Also, its easy to say you'll score 30+ on the MCAT. But those scores represent the top 25% of people who take the test. So make sure you study your ass off for that!

Overall, I think you can do it with a bit of work. Good luck!

I agree. That sentence was worded poorly.

If you can maintain that upward trend, and use a post-bac or SMP to demonstrate to AdComs that you can indeed handle medical school, then yes, you'll be considered competitive.
