I have a really low gpa. It's only 70% which is about 2.7 (and this is including two failing courses). My MCAT score is 35Q. I really want to be a doctor, and was told australia takes almost anyone...i doubt that's true but i'm being hopeful. i have a lot of ECs. Do i stand any chance of getting accepted? Where do you think I should apply? I'm a canadian applicant in my third year.
Your MCAT is excellent, as most accepted internationals usually have a 28 or better. Your GPA might be a problem, most schools expect you to have a 5.5 or better. Australian schools though tend to place more importance on your MCAT and interview than your GPA. If you took some graduate courses and earned higher grades, they might take that into consideration.
Thanks for the reply. What do u mean by 5.5? I meant 2.7 out of a 4.0 system...do u still think that's going to be too low? I am going to try to bring it up to a 3.0 which is about 75% by the end of my fourth year.
It's pretty much a straight conversion from 4 to 7 point scale (e.g., 5.0/7.0 * 4 = 2.9) -- not that they're equivalent reflections of the students but that's what they generally do -- but some schools weight progressive years more, and others don't count the first year, and so on.
Your gpa is pretty low, but at some schools your mcat may allow them to overlook it. And some of the new schools may still have the 4.5 cutoff (2.6) as Joy says (try Bond in particular, though I think they may have raised it to 5.0 this year).
The schools generally don't factor in extracurriculars.
