Do IMGs always end up in underserved areas?

Hi all,

I am considering applying to the US as an IMG, but one of the issues is that, as we all know, IMGs are at a disadvantage when compared to home-schooled students with regards to (a) specialty and (b) location, often being sent to underserved areas to begin with.

My question is, do IMGs ever escape the rut of spending the rest of their days in underserved areas?

I imagine that once you start your residency programme in an underserved area, you are limited in terms of opportunities which will hinder any effort to move to somewhere more desirable (and therefore competitive) in the future. Or is that not the case?

Thanks in advance
