I completed an MD residency in rad onc as a DO. When I started I was the first DO in our program. I was told it was near impossible to get into this field as a DO. When I finished, our program was 3 MD/PhD, 1 MD and 2 DOs when I graduated. This field is currently near impossible to get into as a med student unless you are 90th percentile, yet I know 3 other DOs in my specialty.
Thing to to is take the USMLE. I did not, and that was a HUGE mistake. Take it seriously. Our program wouldn't even interview people below the 80th percentile unless they were an MD/PhD. I got lucky.
Be in the top 10% of your class.
Rock the COMPLEX. You need to show that you test well.
Get published in a peer reviewed journal as a first author, not riding the coat tail of another staff physician.
Ex. Friend of mine got 99% percentile USMLE, 3 peer reviewed publications in a cardiology mags gaduated from AZCOM, and is now in his first year of residency (PGY2) at an excellent rad onc residency.
Any residency is possible if you make yourself better than the other applicants.
