Little confused as to what ITA updates do.

Do they make a difference? like swaying the odds in your favor if you're borderline material?

Or would you get the invite anyway and you'll just get an invite earlier now. I just got an invite to a region of the country I have never been in/is very expensive to get to and am wondering if I should update a few schools.
