Hi all. I tried searching for my answer but couldn't find anything, so I'm posting.

I'm currently an MS-1 at an osteopathic school. My wife (she's not a med student) and I are extremely interested in some residency programs at a hospital associated with a university that has an MD program. Looking through the lists of current and former residents, I can't find any DO's.

I do plan on taking the USMLE, and from what I gather the specialties aren't considered to be super competitive, but I'm not sure how competitive the programs are. My top interested specialty has quite a few FMG's at this particular institution.

So, what would be the best way to word an email to the PD's/PC's to ask if they would consider me since I'll be receiving the DO? I've tried a couple different draft emails but they all seem awkward and forced coming from an MS-1.

Thanks for any help, and if you are a search ninja and can find other threads it would be much appreciated as well.

Honestly, I don't see a whole lot of point in emailing at this point. For all you know, the PD could change next year and the answer to the question could completely change. Once you know your specialty, some of your mentors within that specialty at your school should be able to help answer questions about which programs will give you a shot as well.

Usually if a program has no DO grads, that's a pretty bad sign, but you never know. You could consider doing an away rotation there to get your foot in the door, but before you do that I would go ahead and ask if they consider DO applicants.

Totally agree. I'd do an away rotation there if at all possible. Even if they have never taken a DO in the past, you never know, they might take you as the first. So, it depends on how badly you want to be there. At worst, it's a waste of your time (although a good LOR from a good program is still valuable elsewhere).

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I'll hold off on the email and will definitely plan on doing an away rotation there if they say they'll look at me. It really is the absolutely perfect place for both me and my wife. I am going to do everything I can to get in there, but I want to have realistic expectations.
