Some advice needed. Thanks in advance.

I’m a fourth year DO student and I plan to apply to both advanced and categorical allopathic anesthesia programs. I plan to scramble for an osteopathic internship after the allopathic match so as not to disqualify myself from categorical programs. I’m already registered with the AOA’s National Matching Services. I want to know if I should go through the internship application and interview process through ERAS, and let them know about my plan to scramble during the interview, or should I just bypass the initial application, and go straight for the scramble post allo-match. How does it usually work?

I'm lost. What if you get a categorical spot, then you won't need to scramble. Why do you want to do an osteopathic internship?

That's right if I match allo categorical I don't need internship. But DO internship match is one month before allo match, so if I match to a DO internship it automatically takes away the possibility of matching categorical. This is just my understanding. Am I wrong? I hope I'm wrong.

Not entirely sure. Most programs are categorical now and alot more are going that way. I am a DO that just started and 3/4 of the programs that I applied to were categorical. You can always just interview for a few allopathic prelim years to cover your bases if you don't get the categorical spot. In my opinion, this would be easier so you don't have to worry about the DO match messing up your allopathic match plans

I did the same thing a few years ago. You're on the right track. Apply to a few interships and interview. Tell them about your situation and don't worry b/c they've heard it before. Since most internships don't fill, all you gotta do on match day is give em a call and since they have all your papaerwork and sorta know you you're in.

Thanks so much for that info. This is such a common issue among DO applicants and I'm surprised the answer is not found in the NMS, ERAS, or NRMP websites. If anyone has a link to an official website that addresses this issue, please let us know.

Don't go through the AOA match. Apply Allo and wait for the March results. If need be your can easily call internship programs and walk into an opening. Trust me, there are always plenty of Trad. DO Internship spots open.

Palmetto in FL holds spots for people doing the MD match but they do want to interview you before so they know who you are when you call on match day...i bet many other programs are the same
