DO Interview Tips 2013-2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People, please do not just wear dark jeans and a purple dress shirt. I am not positive that this person was an applicant and I am still hoping he wasn't.

Haha. Maybe a volunteer/helper?

I mean, I'm planning to wear my "fancy" jeans.....lmao.

So I have my first interview next Friday and I am trying to figure out if I need to buy a new suite for it. I have a black skirt suit that I would wear (I think it is more formal than a pants suit). However, I am not sure if I should get something more interesting since it is your typical boring polyester black suit. Similar to this maybe: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/...133#fn=sp=1&spc=298&kws=Black Suits&slotId=34 I don't think the skirt fits me too well as it tends to shuffle around. I was thinking of wearing a colored blouse underneath maybe bright pink or green for contrast. Maybe have some jewelry too (not a lot just a necklace and a watch). Do you think it matters? I would like to get a new suit anyways but I hate shopping and it takes me forever to find anything so if it is not super important I might just skip it for now. In the future, do you think a suit that is not black... like grey or blue some other color could also be appropriate? I think it would be nice to stand out with your attire and not look the same as everyone else, is this true?

Also ladies... how should we wear our hair... I think I am going to get my hair cut the day before... I was thinking about getting my nails done too (french manicure... but I think I might skip that as well)

Anyways, I would like to know what you think.

Thanks for all your help.

For the suit, I would say if it doesn't fit right at this moment get it tailored. You only have a little while to even find a new suit and instead of risk not being able to get one, make sure the one you have fits you very well. I would stay away from really brightly colored blouses and stay more neutral or at least pastel if you are dying for color. Don't wear a lot of jewelry.

Also please please do not get your hair cut the day before. If you want to do it you need to cut it at least a week in advance since longer hair tends to freak out after being cut. Also if the hairdresser makes a mistake, cuts it too short, or anything else that can go wrong you will not be able to fix. I say just get the ends trimmed and leave it at that.

Having attended several interviews so far, I can add a couple things I noticed.

-Some people need to come up with better reasons for why DO than the fact that they just like the philosophy or something along the lines of bashing MDs for "only throwing medications their way."

-it seems like everyone's inspiration for medicine was a sick family member. I'm not saying it's wrong but having been to two group interviews, most people just said their mom has a condition etc so it inspired them to go into medicine.

Ill add more little things when I think of them.

Did you have some group interviews?

This isn't a big deal but...

Ladies, we have more wardrobe options than the gents. Some of you will opt to buy suiting items separately. While matching the shades of the pieces is a challenge in itself, there are more prominent problems with the mix and match option. Suiting with different fiber content will often look disparate. For example if you are wearing a black poly blend suit jacket and a black cotton skirt, one would be able to tell with relative ease that the ensemble was not intended to be a complete suit. Also cotton is not ideal for skirts or pants as they will wrinkle like absolute madness.

First interview tomorrow. Do I bring a copy of my CV with me? Ladies what are you doing about purses? I don't have a professional looking purse. I have a leather messenger bag that my roommate donated to me. It is big but it is black and matches with my suit. I was going to put my portfolio in it. I don't know if I will need it but I will need something to carry my phone and wallet in. I hope I will be ready!!! Travelling commences in 30ish minutes.

Doesn't hurt to have your app materials to look over in the hotel, but I dunno if I'd take it to the interview.

You won't need a CV. They have everything they need. You can probably get away with the messenger. No one really will pay attention to your purse choice.
