Do lab experience help?

I am a pre-optometry student.

Does working in the lab with a professor as an undergraduate student help in getting accepted to optometry school?

Also, I am a chemistry major but there is an opening for a lab job with a professor in the biology department. Is it normal for a chemistry major to work in the biology department?

These are the factors that I think they look at for admissions.

GPA, OATs, and than extracurricular/jobs/clubs.

GPA and OATs are the most important, and the other stuff will help if you have a good GPA and OATs, but you can't depend on extracurriculars alone.

Any experience in the optometry field, whether it be Optometrist's assistant, lab tech, or just shadowing looks good because it shows that you are not going into this field blindly. And it also helps that you can get a letter of recommendation from your Optometrist also.

If there is a Pre-optometry organization at your school, I would recommend joining that also...

If your grades are not up to par, than the other stuff will make no difference, so make sure you have a competitive OAT or GPA.
