Hello everyone,

I am currently in the last semester of my Master's in Medical Sciences (like a soft SMP). I have already sent in my transcripts to amcas and aacomas (overall 7As and 1 A- for fall and spring) and am worried that my GPA will drop from 3.96 --> 3.8 after this term bc I am studying for the MCAT and getting my application together. Unfortunately I have exams in my classes literally days before my MCAT and can't afford to fail them but plan on getting Bs (hence the gpa drop).

Is this a big deal? My ugpa was ~3.7cgpa 3.6sgpa but I wanted to do the masters to show I could handle upper level courses. I know the ideal thing to do would be to work hard on everything but I think my MCAT should be my main priority. What should I do?

3.7/3.6 and a 3.8 masters is fine, do well on the MCAT even if you have to push the date back. Are you applying next June?

I am reapplying this cycle. I plan on taking the MCAT on June 29 and will submit my primary at the end of this June with my old score (33). I should be able to submit secondaries by early August if I prewrite. Does this plan sound okay?

Also, will med schools even see my grades from this term before they decide to accept/reject me? Would schools rescind my acceptance if I let my GPA drop?

Yes this plan is fine. You'll do great mate. best of luck.

One of my rules is to never apply to medical school without knowing your MCAT score. What you should do is submit your primary to one school only for verification, either a throwaway school or, preferably, a high reach. When you get your new MCAT back, based on the score you can add more schools and the application will be transmitted in a day. Since you wont be submitting until late June, your verification may not be complete by the time you get your score back. The reason you do the single school is if your MCAT is a boom, you may need to select lower schools or if MCAT is a fantastic, you may be able to apply to better schools.
HMS is always the #1 throwaway school <3

Should I be prioritizing my MCAT above my classes at this point?

Thanks for the responses.

Gap year sounds right. Finish the masters strong and go put some serious work into your MCAT, then you have some time to prewrite, work on ECs and save some $$$

I've been studying for MCAT for quite some time already and I'm confident I'll be able to score 510+. I don't plan on taking another gap year after already having taken 2. I applied back in 2015 (my junior yr of undergrad), got two IIs and then skipped this last cycle to do the masters and build ecs.

My main question is: will getting two B's in my final semester really hurt my chances if I've already submitted my transcript?

No such thing. They’re both important and if you can’t manage to do both extremely well, you should seek to take a gap year.

Define "extremely well". I'm applying to DO schools as well to avoid taking another gap year.

Has your 33 expired?

Yes, I took that mcat at the end of my sophomore year (July 2014) so it is too late for many schools. Once my primary is good to go I'll apply to a school that still accepts it just to get verified though.
