Hi all, I’ve heard both sides so I figured I’d ask. Is it necessary to have a DO letter? I will have 1-2 very good MD letters so I’m wondering if it’s necessary to get a DO letter. ~3.65 GPA, no MCAT yet, good EC’s. Texas resident, white male

It is necessary for the schools that require a letter. If you are applying to schools without that requirement, then you should be fine. Some people will tell you that you are more competitive with one, though I did not have one and got an acceptance.

Lacking one won't hurt.
Having one always helps

Note: there are schools that require a DO LOR.

Look at DMU. They look at MD and DO letters equally!

I attend TCOM and have never shadowed, nor did I have a letter from, a DO.

It did not appear to impact my application at all; I received an interview immediately (same day) following receipt of my committee letter.
