DO/MD Program at Nova
Started by adizzle87
Either you want to be a DO or a DMD/DDS. Doing both is a waste of time and money I think. Plus you need to think of DO VS MD, and that you will have to do a res for a few years after you get your DO, where you wont be using your dental skills. I think it's stupid for a school to offer this, it should only be offered if your in a maxo surg program.
case has an md/dds program. ucsf has an mba/dds program. these dual degree programs are becoming more popular to a competitive profession. while it is unnecessary because most dentists are practicing without it, doesnt necessarily make it a waste.
its aim is for oral health practitioners to have a better holistic approach + better understanding of systemic diseases. that said, you better have a solid GPA. im sure they dont want it to be seen as a back door for the med school.

I think the option of getting a medical degree in addition to a dental degree is beneficial in some cases as others have said... just not for the prestige. I feel terrible for DOs who spend all their time in medical school, internships, residencies... just to have someone ask them if they are like a PA or something. That's why you have to do it for the love of the field, not the title.

Very well said!👍👍👍
While we're on the topic of "Why we are not jealous" or for some "why we are jealous" of MDs, has anyone ever thought of doing the DO/DMD program at Nova? Best of both worlds right? I hear the purpose of the program is for you to help the underserved?
Pretty sure that this program does not exist. Its possible to first get your DMD or DO and THEN do the other, as is quite commonly done for oral surgery, but doing them together is practically impossible, and Im almost 100% that its not an option...
My gf's in the DO program there and she has never heard of this either...
case has a relatively new dmd/md program, for those of you out there that are crazy enough

Yeah it is a real program according to their website. Also, oral surgery does not work the way you think it does.
I know of a dentist with a successful practice who has gone back to medical school so he can do his own anesthesiology. Hard Core.

Come again? I do believe dentists can do their own anethesiology without going to medical school.
They have CE courses and certification just for that.
