should I do a MPH after med school so I concentrate on my medical school studies or should I go for it now and get a scholarship that covers the cost for the MPH degree. I feel some what that it might take away time put towards studying for the boards ect. I really want to get an MPH but wanted to see what people thought about taking it during med school or after?

If it is free, do it now.

If you want to actually learn something, do it after working for about 5 years. Otherwise, you won't really understand the subtleties of what they are trying to get across to you and instead you'll try to learn 'skills'.

PM me for more 411, if you'd like.

I also recommend doing it later unless it is all paid for now. As you progress in your training your ideas of what area of public health to have an emphasis in may change plus it is more meaningful with more experience under your belt.

Some residencies will let you do an MPH concurrently, some paying for it and others not.

Most of the physicians I know with an MPH did it during residency or well after residency. I did mine before medical school and used the degree (in administration and policy) for a couple of years before I started med school.

I got my MHA during med school at half the price, but not for free (well I only have one class left); it was not too bad but it was geared more towards professionals already in medicine and I think it was more useful for them, but it was still a very good experience. Plus it feels good to see people's expression when you say you did both. One of my colleagues is going for both a DO/MHA/MPH (show off...).
