Hi everyone,

I just wanted to ask a question that really struck me this morning.

If some on like Osama binladin, or sadam hussin, ever came to your hospital and wanted treatment,
As a doctor, would you treat this patient, or try to kill him??????

Its more like an ethical question (Edit: I guess not, lol)

Edit: I just wanted to hear your responds. If I were a doctor, I would try my best to help the patient no matter what the circumstances are.

I would first have to examine his spelling, grammar, and punctuation. 😛

Seriously though, one's job as a physician is to provide appropriate medical care regardless of the patient's identity. Otherwise we become vigilantes. If Osama Bin Laden came to my hospital, I would provide the same services to him as the next person. If we get him well enough and wheeled to the lobby, then the proper authorities can have him.

Stop watching House.
This has been a huge recurring them on House this season.

I promise you, by the time you're done with undergrad, have your MD (or DDS), have invested 8 years of time and MONEY into earning it, and are eight years older, you will not feel the need to ask this question.

Valid question. Things that happen in House happen daily in medical school.

How is this an ethical dilemma? When is it ethical to kill someone you're supposed to be treating? Sure, people would support your decision, but is it your job to be killing people that no one likes?

We're not judge, jury, executioner. The person who was responsible for the Ft. Hood shootings was being treated by doctors regardless of his status as the shooter.

Yeah it's not your call to decide who lives or dies. Simple as that.

If you feel you cannot treat the patient because of who they are you should make that known and pass on the case if possible

im glad to hear some answers, thanks!!!

LOL, i learned alot from this show!!!

huh? So you probably some, ahem, interesting ideas about hospital and HCW life then... :scared:

funny question, though....well, at least funny you actually asked it! Also an interesting one, I guess.

Good luck with dentistry!

Is this a real question? Come on, even if Hitler climbed out of his grave and asked for his vitals to be stabilized it would be the responsibility of a physician (a healer) to do so....you aren't judge, jury, or executioner or is there a combined fellowship that I'm not aware of?

👍

If Saddam Hussein showed up at my hospital, I would run because that would probably indicate an imminent zombie attack.

hahaha, I started cracking up when I read this because I was thinking the same thing! =D

But as a doctor, your job is to help all people get better. We are not gods (though, some of us may dispute that fact. . .ahem, surgeons =)) and we do not get to decide who lives and dies. You help all people regardless of what they have done, and if they are a criminal, you call the police and let our judicial system do the rest.

i would open him up in search of WMD's. That's the last place you'd look.

Uh, would YOU try to kill him?
If so...that's a little disconcerting lol. Don't really see how this is an ethical dilemma at all.

Treat his injuries then shoot him in the parking lot and collect the reward.
