  1. Pharmacy Student
I am currently a student at the University of Southern Nevada and thoroughly wish that I had gone elsewhere. The teachers don't teach the material and write these ridiculously hard test that are almost impossible to pass, especially with the crappy notes that we have to study from. The test and learning environment has been so bad for the P1s that 20 students have dropped out already (AKA got 5 summers and was removed from the program). This program is entirely self taught!!!!! The absolute worst thing about USN is the anti-student attitude that the administration, faculty and staff have. EVERYTHING is the students' fault period. The school administration, faculty, and staff believe that they are never in the wrong and that the students are little children that need to be punished. The BEST part is that the students have to follow the hand book, but teachers can do whatever they want. For example, teachers will flirt with some students in class, while telling other students that they are stupid for not understanding something. At school, there is a massive amount of anger from all students and I know that USN is going to push one student too far and that student will go postal. I only pray that I am not there when that happens. I have never been to a school that treats their students like USN. For $40,000 dollars a year, this would be the absolute last place I would go if I knew what I knew now. Listen to my warning and pick a different school. You will not be able to party on the strip and pass this program so get that thought out of your head now. You have no idea how many people chose USN because they though that they would get 3 day weekends with no homework and be able to party on the strip all the time. That is not true. If you do decide to go to USN, remember that you have been warned!!!!!!

So much for being happy getting an interview....

lol? 😕

Wow this is one of the many negative post I have read USN. Must be somewhat true if so many people have come forth to warn about the school.

I would take it with a grain of salt. The OP just joined today to make this post. If anything, I would only consider opinions of more active members.

Who knows, it might be someone who is trying to dissuade others from going while he/she moves up the waiting list. Or maybe I'm being too much of a cynic.

Agreed

What's wrong with flirting with a MILF?

LOL

My close friend is a P1 at USN this year, and he tells me the same things about this school. I've posted before on other threads about his comments. I cancelled my interview there, but from what the OP says, alot of the comments are confirmed by my friend. I'm just lucky enough I had options instead of USN. If I were accepted to USN and no other school, I would be happy, BUT extremely apprehensive about what I may be getting myself into.

Hey, I think I know you. And I also think I know the guy you're talking about.

That's the inherent problem with several of the existing 3-year programs. When your focus is to get students in and out the door as quickly as possible, that is often reflected in the attitude of faculty and staff. Consequently, the quality of education and the quality of student life suffers. Pharmacy school is depressing enough without making it harder on yourself.

It seems to me that there was a post like this about 4 months ago... something about parking lots or something.

Wish we could get an AdCom from USN in here!!

hah passion...

last time, i referenced that post on the CPG vs USN thread and a "USN faculty member" rebuttled the claims.

defend your school against multiple student claims, katrina

I think this thread was started by someone who got waitlisted at USN and doesn't want any more competition. USN has plenty of students that pass their national exams and even learn at school.

so this begs the question (for me at least, maybe no one else): would Touro Nevada ever consider a Pharmacy school at their Henderson location?

I'm sure they have considered it but really there is no room in Nevada for more than the 140 PharmD grads USN puts out each year. On a related note I've wondered when the day will come when Touro merges with or buys out USN. It happened with Nova and Southeastern universities.

what scares me more than these warnings is that fact that a girl committed suicide while on USNs program. I wonder what her issues were. does anyone know her story? I'd like to read more on her story and her motive. was it the 90% pasing stress or what?

I had no idea the class was that large. Wow...

and editing to add: DUH it is right there under Admissions Highlights. I am sure I have seen that but did not retain it.

It was a male, not a female who committed suicide and it was not an issue of academics. USN does have a class of 140 in Henderson but our students are still finding jobs and residency positions. Students can believe what they want about faculty but academia is not exactly the highest paying or the easiest type of pharmacy job (i.e. not in it for the money). The faculty I work with are extremely caring and only want the students to succeed. Yes the program is hard, but if the program was not challenging, you might also question whether you are getting your moneys worth. On a final note, USN is not for sale. Good luck to those who are interviewing or those who are waiting to hear about their status. 🙂

LOL! You make it seem like all 140 graduates are gonna stay in Nevada once they're done. 🙄

Seriously dude...don't you have anything better to do? If you really are a current student there and the program was so bad, shouldn't you be studying instead of lurking around on SDN? Your reply on the other thread was posted around 2:30 AM. Don't you have an 8:00 AM class to go to if you really are a student there? If I were a student at USN, in an accelerated program, I would be too busy studying to be on SDN at 2:30 AM. Especially if class started at 8:00 in the morning. Come on buddy, you're not fooling anyone. You started your account yesterday. Most pharmacy students usually have a couple hundred postings under their belt by the time they get accepted...look at Diastole for example.

You obviously don't have to agree with the OP, but they do have the right to voice their opinion. I've noticed a growing number of USN students angry about the school...so it is fine that more and more students share their opinion.

I'm fine with students sharing their opinions. But you're missing the point. I don't even think it's a current student. Think about it...new account...right around the time accepted students are making their decisions whether to attend or not. Look like an attempt from someone trying to move on up the wait list.

Dude.....I average 4 hours of sleep during the week because I am up late studying. Being up at 2:30am is not uncommon. It is also not uncommon to pull all nighters before a test. I study a lot, but it only takes 10 min to post something. If you don't believe me then go to USN and find out for yourself. I am not stopping you or anyone else. I only speak the truth.

what I can't understand is how a "pharmacy student" can misspell angry in their newly created screen name.
all credibility lost right there.

Well I think I know you too, since we both had Doc Savino for Organic Chem...haha. Nice job tracking me down!

hmmmm...

its a new account because why wouuld someone whos giving their opinion in the form of a warning use their originail account where theres a possibly the faculty at USN may know which student is bashing their school and possibly cutting all ties with that person?

there might be a possibility he's on the waitlist but why is USN the only school I hear problems about? why not other schools that are better than USN such as UCSF or UCSD, where more it's difficult to get in and where it's harder to get off the waitlist becuase its a state school and everyone wants to go there?

we obvioulsy don't konw who this person is but poeple are allowed to voice their opinion. its up to the individual to believe them or not and do their own research and decide for themselves.

There is a massive amount of anger from all students? C'mon now, if you guys believe that then you'll believe anything. I'm not angry. I don't think the exams are near impossible to pass. I get three day weekends every other week in which I could spend my time partying on the Strip but I'm usually traveling instead.

Some students do get really stressed out. USN isn't for everybody. It is a professional program and you are going to have to work harder than in undergrad. If you were spending all your free hours studying to get good grades in the prepharm program then USN might be too hard for you. If you want to slack off and cram at the last minute, then USN probably isn't the school for you. Maybe that will work better in a traditional four year school.

One thing I love about USN is that the students really try to help each other. I did my undergraduate work at a large state school graded on the curve. People were very competitive so they weren't that willing to share helpful info. But at USN, people will make drug charts and it gets passed around on email just because it is useful. Nobody is competing so people are nice and do things like that. One of the main reasons why I chose USN was because I didn't want a repeat of my undergraduate days and I have not been disappointed.

Maybe oneangrystudent was taken...geez people I'm not on anyone's side here but the judging someone solely because of a misspelling or something else that is trivial has got to stop... "Omg that person writes in shorthand, he is a LOSER!!!"..."Omg that person is a red head, they must have AIDS"..yeah thats what it sounds like..

First of all, everyone is anonymous on here to begin with...no contact info is listed so the school won't know who you are anyways. Let me say this again, in case you missed it the first time. Opinions are fine, but there are certain etiquettes you must follow. How about you go look up what "internet trolling" is, then get back to me. I wouldn't be surprised if that person's account gets banned soon.

Thanks for your input Diastole. The forums need more people like you to encourage others. 🙂 Isn't that what we're all here for? To give and receive support. Applying to pharmacy school and waiting to get accepted is stressful enough, and having someone try to use scare tactics does not help at all. So thanks for your positive words! 👍

As a current pharmacy student I can only tell you that the school I am at is really pushing for appropriate and professional behavior in all aspects of life to include social networks on the internet. I am going to go out on a limb here and say that saying the things this OP said would not be looked upon favorably and hence there might be a need to ensure being completely anonymous by creating a new account because their old account could possibly help identify him. I know it is a far shot but considering the consequences of him voicing his negative opinion about USN while encouraging others to not apply to this school, kind of makes sense. If you don't believe him seek other current USN students opinion on the matter and if you are not even considering the school then who cares. I would have to admit if this is this OPs way of trying to improve his odds of getting in they must be a long shot to begin with.

You missed a good time at his retirement party. Christie came with her whole family, and I brought Sarah as my date. Nothing ever became of that, but it was still a good time nonetheless.

QFT! The people I know that are in that school tell me the same thing. That's one of the things I like about the 3 year schools is the fact that they are not competing against each other rather helping each other. I bet in a four year school, people are still competing to get the best grades (so they can still stay competitive with one another.

Anyway OP, I respect your right to have an opinion, but don't pass it off as fact. I've been to USN multiple times for tours, Q and A, and information and they all have been nice to me and spare the time that "they don't have" to help me out; both students and staff. I've done the same at LECOM and Midwestern Glendale (granted I live 30 minutes away from Midwestern and I live about 5-6 hours away from USN) and trust me when I say that out of all the schools I visited, USN has been nicer to me than any other school.

Yes, thank you cascones, for this small yet refreshing infusion of logic that this board quickly seems to lack

This guys probably just a disgruntled student who doesn’t have what it takes to make it through pharmacy school. The guy has seven posts, probably just made his user-name to bash this school. I hope people don’t listen to this joker and formulate their own opinions.

is the program just exceptionally hard or something, or more along the lines of what the OP said. I'm just curious why others at the school have complained, the OP doesn't seem to be alone.

I'm all for open opinion and the right to exercise amendment 1 but cmon! USN is an ACCELERATED program, its curriculum is CONDENSED into a 3 yr format. Seriously, it doesn't take a genius to figure this out.

Pharmacy school in itself is hard, so wouldn't that ring a bell that MAYBE just MAYBE a 3 yr program would be a tad bit more difficult? It's annoying when people are whining and saying that people are dropping out like flies. It just proves that they simply couldn't keep up with the studying. Some people have lk a 4.0 gpa and take lk 2 classes each semester and think they can keep up. A good predictor of success in a graduate level is not only the gpa but also the course load. In pharm school you are taking at least 18 units, not 4 or 8 but 18. I've tutored a pharmacy student who went to a great school in CA even before applying to pharm school who didn't know what to do. She just couldn't keep up at the pace and enlisted a tutor to organize the notes and basically regurgitate what was already listed on the lecture notes.

So people, if you don't think you can handle going to a school that might be harder than a normal pharmacy school, do us a favor and don't go. If you are, take responsibility and shut up.

I worked with a retail pharmacist who graduated from USN and she was very reluctant to say good things about the school when I asked her if she liked it there. With that said, she was a VERY competent pharmacist so it's not like they are churning out bad PharmDs. I just think it's not one of the better schools in term of experience, but will still prepare you to become a RPh.

Interestingly, I got the same sort of vibe when I asked the same question to a couple of MCPHS alumni; regardless, they were competent.

My sentiments exactly

I hear at USN if you pass your test the first time around you only have to go to school 4 days of the week. Most students at USN are able to work because of this and I also hear that students take the same test as a team after they have done the test alone the first time and if the group percentage is high enough it raises your personal score as well. It is a different way of testing but helps with group problem solving which is what we will be a part of in the pharmacy profession.

what I can't understand is how a "pharmacy student" can misspell angry in their newly created screen name.
all credibility lost right there.
I believe it is One-An-Grey-Stu-Den it is code for I was expecting to get laid at pharmacy school but it still hasn't happened.

I want to make a couple of comments then I really need to stop posting and study.

1. Those people not at USN or planning on going to USN need to get off this thread and find something better to do. This matter does not concern you!!!!!

2. I speak the truth and those people who don't believe me will find out after the first few months that USN is not what it seems. I am only giving people the warning that I wish I had received.

3. Everyone studies everyday period. Those who say otherwise are lying. As everyone on this thread says this is a professional program and of course you have to study. Don't let people fool you into thinking this is easy because its not.

4. For those going to USN and don't know what to believe then I encourage you to ask USN students to list 5 things that they like about the school and see what you get. Do this at the interview!!!!! I would be shock if anyone can list 5 things with ease. "Group work" doesn't count because no one likes group work at that school. Its just busy work that waste time. Also "non-competitive nature" doesn't count because drug charts are shared to help those with summers not get kicked out. Its an us verses them attitude at that school.

I want to wish everyone the best of luck on there future endeavors, Whatever they may be.

You think by partying on the strip can pass you any other pharmacy program? Seriously, you went to USN because you thought you could party on the strip all the time? USN really made a wrong decision by admitting you! If you don't realize how ridiculous you sound, I really hope you are the one getting kicked out so you won't harm other people as a pharmacist.

After reading this post I really don't have an opinion because I haven't been to USN.

What I will says is I hope peolple are smart enough to make their own decision on USN. If you listen to some disgruntled student B**** and whine about how he can't party on the strip three days a week and u decided not to interview or attend, you have made a terrible decision.

One poster went on a rant about how bad Pitt Pharm was. Did I listen to him….no. I've been to Pitt talked to the students and have made my own decision that it is an excellent school.

I hope nobody is a pinhead and everyone makes their own deicisons.

Wait, it's 2010 and you want me to think for myself?

Nonsense. I'll let the media, and in this case, SDN, tell me what I should do.

Top Bottom
