I took a bit longer to figure out what I wanted to do in terms of my career. In undergraduate school I thought I was interested in learning about pharmaceutics and become a pharmacist, but after working at a hospital pharmacy and retail pharmacy I realized that I would be pretty miserable if I were to do it day-in day-out and had no interest in it whatsoever.

I also volunteered at the hospital and observed a few physicians and nurses and realized that it wasn't for me either. I just knew I wanted to work in health care, but I couldn't quite find my fit.

I'm a really artistic person. I enjoy playing instruments, doing arts and crafts, painting, and drawing. In other words, I like to be really hands on and work with intricate details and I figured dentistry would be a good fit for me as that is what it seems to offer. Does this seem like a legitimate reason as to why I would be well-suited for the job? I have pretty extensive experience with working with patients, but I really want to enjoy the job although every career has it's ups and downs.

I'm going to be volunteering at a few local offices within the next few months, and hopefully I won't be letdown.

Am I missing something? Do I have the wrong view of what will be required of me as a dentist or what sort of work I'll be doing?

I think that seems like a good reason to be drawn to a career in dentistry. When you volunteer, you will be able to see other aspects of dentistry that don't involve intricate details, such as managing an office and working with assistants and hygienists. I would guess that most pre-dental students have a general interest in healthcare, and it seems like you are doing what needs to be done to find your right match in the healthcare field. Good luck!
