I recently found out that the AOA (not the American Osteopathic Association) is a medical school honor society. Being a member of the AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha) is actually beneficial to land some competitive residencies. Can osteopathic students join the AOA? Thanks

No, I don't think that DO schools can sponsor chapters of Alpha Omega Alpha--but just like everything else--there's an osteopathic version. I think that the requirement for membership in AOA is being in the top 5 or 10% of your class...it varies from school to school. The osteopathic version is Sigma Phi Sigma (I think...)

Close, it is Sigma Sigma Phi

There is another nationwide honors org. for the very very very top. I think 15 out of 225 in my class were invited. We are talking a close to 4.0 GPA overall, at the end of your second year. I have no clue what the name is, just know about it because one of my best buddies in class was invited to join. There is no other requirement aside from the top academic performance, and you are inducted and do not depend on "personality" votes from classmates.

By the way, I would not put much weight on the Sigma Sigma Phi thing. Who gets in varies from school to school. There are factors other than grades in the selection, namely involvement in extra curricular activities at school. However, I know several people who had the grades, received an invitation to apply, but were not selected, even though they did a lot of extracurricular work, because they did it through their church or other organization rather than through the clubs at school... It didn't seem fair to me at the time and it still doesn't. Not to mention that many of the students with kids would have a hard time getting in either, even though they do lots of "extracurricular activities" with their kids (you know, I still believe that "charity begins at home" kind of thing).

For those that had been asking about the DO equivalent of MD?s AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha) national honor society, it is called Psi Sigma Alpha otherwise known as the National Osteopathic Scholastic Honor Society.

Pags,

It is my understanding that at NYCOM we do not induct students into the honor society until the fourth year. As expected, you need to be in the top 10% of the class. I once spoke with DiGiovanna's Secretary when she was making up the honor society certificates for the graduating students and that's what she told me. Then again, if you're curious and want some details, you should talk to DiGiovanna personally.
