Do many PAs engage in clinical reseaerch? In a related question, assuming one meets all the other admissions criteria, does having a strong background in Lab research strenghten a PA application anywhere as much as a med school appl.?

Some do, but I wouldn't say many.

Lab research can indeed strengthen an application. Strengthening to the level of other applicants however, is not guaranteed.

speaking as a pa school admin committee member, I would much rather see a strong CLINICAL background than research related activities. most places don't even count this as clinical time towards the minimum requirement. if you have it in addition to clinical time that is a bonus, but by itself it is essentially worthless.
