Do people go to Vet schools in the UK because they can't get in in the US?

I'm just wondering for schools like Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Royal College that are accredited by the AMVA, are they popular because they have high school entry, because people want to study in the UK or because they couldn't get in in the US?

I've always thought Edinburgh's Vet School was pretty good, quite prestigious considering it is the home of Dolly the Sheep and ranked 1st in the UK for research (UK RAE). However, I read on their website their pass rate for the NAVLE was 81% (26 out of 32 candidates). Granted, most of the UK students would not have taken the exam, likely only those aiming to practice in North America. Generally the pass rate for the NAVLE is much higher at North American schools around 98%+.

Actually looking it up even more my guess is its incredibly variable. Seems like all the students 32 of 32 passed in 2009 so I guess it was a fluke.

Students decide to attend school in the UK and Ireland for a variety of reasons. I chose to attend because I could be closer to my SO who is Scottish. All schools are rigorous in their requirements. I believe Glasgow and Edinburgh require you to have a minimum of a 3.4 to apply - many students have GPAs greater than 3.4

So would you say getting into Glasgow/Edinburgh is harder than getting into some US vet schools?

Look at the websites, search the pre-vet forum, there are resources to answer your question and more that you may have.

Are they popular with whom? People from the UK? US? Canada? Australia?

The answers will be very variable.......for those from the UK or EU, it's a lot closer. For those from further away, some want to experience school elsewhere, some may want to live there, some may want to be close to family, some may just broaden the number of places they apply to.

I think I can help clarify this point - this was discussed during an orientation meeting.

The administration said the reason the NAVLE pass rate is lower for UK schools some years is because the British students often take the NAVLE just to see if they could pass. Most British students don't plan on ever working in North America, so the NAVLE (and studying/preparing for it) is not vital to their careers and therefore not taken seriously, bringing down the pass rate. Passing the NAVLE is essential to the careers of students studying in North America, thus its taken/prepped for much more seriously - and they do not have any half-hearted attempts that bring down the overall pass rate.

are there really that many students willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for a half arsed attempt at an exam to get licensed somewhere they could care less about? I can think of a million things I'd rather spend money on!

I know quite a few students who will be sitting the NAVLE in April as prep for our final exams. RVC pays for the subscription to VetPrep for anyone sitting. Others I've heard of have taken it to leave their options open, in case they ever want to work in the US or Canada.
