I don't know if postbaccs really work, I'm pretty much loosing faith. I'm planning on applying to osteopathic medical school. My undergrad GPA is roughly 2.8, and I just completed 2 years of postbacc, and I think I received a post bacc GPA of about 3.4.
I don't know if 2 years of postbacc and 1 year of SMP, could possibly offset 4 years of ****ing up.

it really depends on the calsses you take at your post bacc. if you are getting a 3.4 and taking the same classes as the medical students at your school then it should help because you did better than most of the med students! at least that's how my post bacc works. the b in my program is the med student's average. so getting a 3 would be getting a med school b. thus a 3.4 is a little better than a med schools B+

Lykyamy - r u sure your not mistaking an SMP and a post-bacc? Typically, a post-bacc tend to be undergraduate classes such as pre-req or upper-level sciences whereas an SMP is grad level classes and sometimes med school classes.

So if the OP is taking a post-bac, a B+ isnt good. If its an SMP, it might be a diff story.

the program im in is classified as a post bacc by the school. so maybe different schools have different names for their things. i know that i wont have a masters in the end. but i do know that from this program a 3.4 is fine and a bunch of people are getting interviews and acceptances with similar grades.

Well a 3.4 at my post-bacc witha a 2.8 GPA undergrad won't get you an interview anywhere IMO

But YMMV depending on the school

Post bac programs do work, I am proof.

1994: barely graduated from Ivy League school with degree in history.

2000-2001: Temple post bac (GPA 4.0)

2002-2006: Temple medical school

2006-2009: Internal Medicine residency

2009- : Board certified Internist

well i guess i dont know everyones gpa and mcat but i do know that for the people in my program you dont have to get a 4 to get into school.

Well, then what are you worried about? It sounds like you already know.

He unfortunately had a 3.4 until your awesome 4.0

He is really going to have to do more damage repair and work on getting a lot of 4.0's IMO

Agreed with Swedish.

A year or two of 4.0 (hell, a 3.7 would have been sufficient) balances off a 2.8 GPA. But a 3.4 doesnt cut it. Whichever way you look at - you have not been able to perform academically to the average med student (MD 3.6-65, DO 3.45 i believe).

I just don't understand what out of a 2.8 undergrad, followed by a 3.4 post bac (unknown # of credits) indicates that you can do med school work.

Oh and another post-bac who made it to med school is Newmansown

i'm not worried loll. i was just trying to show that a 3.4 in a post bacc is not the end of the world 😉

look you cant worry about offsetting your GPA by doign more classes...all you need to make sure is taht you're making a progression so ...your GPA increasing is showing more dedication to your desire to go into medicine or whatever it is you want to get into...show a progression and mention this in your personal statement and they will overlook the mistakes you made in your undergrad..also do well in teh mcat..which is i guess easier said than done

thank you everybody for your perspective, but I have a feeling that post bacc don't work. I miss calculated, but I have around 3.5 post bacc, which is still not competitive.
maybe we shouldn't waste our time and effort and just move on to another major.

I say this cuz I never heard of anyone getting into medical school with a low GPA even if they have extra work like post baccs or smp. It's always those 3.3 or higher that stand a chance

I suggest you go do some reading cubic. There are people that make it.

Granted, its not a high number, and it takes years of hard work - but it can be done

First, congratulations. This is why we are all here on these forums.

Second, FYI to everyone out there, Temple's Post-Bac program has a guaranteed acceptance into the Temple Medical school if a 3.5 is maintained throughout.

...they only accept undergraduate cGPA and SciGPA of 3.3 and up right now... so unfortunately this didnt apply to cubicw86
