I'm currently shadowing a DO and will have to ask the DO for a rec letter after I'm done shadowing since it's required for the application. However, I've only shadowed for 8 hours and can probably only squeeze in another 4 hrs for a total of 12 hrs with that DO. Problem is, how will the DO know what to write about in the rec letter if I've only shadowed for that long? I don't think they will be able to really know who I am as a person by just shadowing but schools such as LECOM ask the evaluator questions such as "how does this person respond in stressful situations."

Has anyone else been in this situation where you feel like the DO may not know you well enough to ask of a letter from them? Or are osteopathic med school just looking for verification or a short 1 paragraph rec letter?

I've also applied this cycle, application has already been verified by AACOMAS and I've submitted secondaries, just need this one rec letter to be complete.

As a faculty member and admissions committee member at a DO school, I say this. Yes, certainly the longer and more intense the shadowing, perhaps, the better. BUT, on YOUR end the effort to schedule the shadowing and get the experience relevant to your applicant schools will be noted positively. Very rarely will any single reference letter "make/break" an applicant's chances. Do not over-think this situation. You HAVE shadowed a DO. Good thinking and, sincerely, Good Luck to you.
