Yes, some schools will disregard your application. Go on the admissions website for each school and look for those that say a DO letter is required.

There are certain schools that require a DO letter - if those schools adhere strictly to this policy, then it would be a limiting factor on which schools you could apply to. There are schools that accept both MD/DO letters, so they wouldn't disregard your application - but having a DO letter would definitely do more for your application than having an MD letter, in my opinion. I think it would be cool to have a DO and MD letter because it shows that you explored both philosophies.

I know that it is important to have a letter from a DO when applying to a DO school, but will not having one really cause some schools to disregard my entire application? I have two strong letters from MDs, a committee letter, and a letter from the hospital I volunteered for.

I've definitely seen a few that required DO, and a ton that "strongly reccomend" having a DO LOR. I dont think not having one would preclude you from applying broadly, but it will definitely assist your app wherever you apply.

Ive shadowed two DOs and gotten letters from each. Honestly I feel like DOs are by and large pretty accessible and want to share their practice with people who want to also be DOs. I know trying to get LORs can be painful, but it could go a long way!

I'm in school now without having had a DO letter so as long as you have one from a physician you're good. I think Texas and wvsom absolutely require it but other than those it's a recommendation. There may be others that require it that I'm not aware of.

Seems like now very few programs require a letter from a DO. Just cross them off the list and it will helpfully narrow your field of application.
