i was just wondering what the average MCAT and GPA is for most of the DO schools and what is a "competitive score". I know most places say their incoming class average an 8 but what are they really looking for.

also- does applying earlier really help and how early?

Applying early does help alot. Send out your application on June 1st.

Early is a must. I can't stress how much it helps. Get it done before the august MCAT takers get their scores sent in Oct! For expediency, by all means available, get your letters done and sent EARLY. Profs take FOREVER in nearly every circumstances. I have personally witnessed them take months. Asking is not enough. Politely follow up until it is received by the school or letter service (highly recommended!). Email if you need more info.

Check out the US News report on grad schools on their website. They show average MCAT/GPAs for all med schools.
