Do Research Hours Still Count If You've Gotten a Credit for Them?

So I don't know how to use SDN because i'm brand new :joyful:. Im wondering about research on the application. It says "research should NOT appear as credit on a school transcript." I have 5 semesters of research (1 credit each). Does this mean I cannot put the 1500+ hours of research I have done down on my application?

Technically no because you did research for a class. Not outside of your schoolwork as an extracurricular, but you could still put it on there and it won't be an issue. Just don't mention that it was a course

It counts as long as it wasn’t part of an actual class. If you do independent research at my school they add a research “course” to your transcript just so they can charge the appropriate lab fees. It’s labels as a 1 credit course just titled research. It’s separate from a class that requires research as part of the lab so it’s ok to put down.

Whether you got credit for it or not, go ahead and put it in your application. The reality is you won’t get in trouble or something for putting it down and it’s better to show schools (that care) that you participated in research than having nothing in that area. During one of my interviews with a research heavy school they asked if I had ever done formal research, I said no but told the admissions director that I took a class on research design (for credit) and explained what I knew. The admissions director seemed fine with this and I was later accepted. Obviously, this is anecdotal, but shows admissions directors are not as strict as you think about how you interpret your experiences.

No. Most people do their hours on their out of class free time or during the summer. Shows that you dedicated your time outside of any academic credit. If let’s say your requirement to get the credit was 100 hours and you did 1500 because you went on your free time and over and above the credit, then maybe you can put the difference.
