How tough is it to get into a DO surgical residency vs MD ?

I have low stats, so thats why Im asking. I want to do a general surgery residency and was wondering if going the DO route will affect me negatively. I can always go MD where I live, (Puerto Rico), but just considering my alternatives.

Thanks for any help!

It'll be tough either way, MD or DO. You have to study hard and do the right things. That being said, you may very well change your mind about wanting to do surgery while in medical school. It's happened before.

And next time use the search function. Pretty sure this has been asked about 1000 times.

You'll be surprised, some people that struggle to get into medical school really thrive once they get there. Then again, some continue to struggle. Regardless, general surgery is becoming increasingly competitive. My advice is to head into med school like you plan to go into the most competitive specialty there is then your options will be completely open to you.

In 2011, the average comlex score for someone who matched aoa general surgery was a 502, which is around the 50th percentile. In 2011, there were 1.63 applicants per AOA general surgery spot..

Everyone that I know that matched AOA general surgery this year had a comlex score around a 530, which is the 67th percentile.

Pre-meds stats to get into medical school have NOTHING to do with getting into residency. All comes down to how well you do on your boards. You won't know how competitive you will be for surgery until you take Step I and Step II. No way to kow at this point.

I've heard that some hospitals discriminate against physicians trained at AOA residencies. How true is this?

More true in surgery than in other specialties. Things are changing for the better... if you impress on an audition rotation and rock the board MOST places will at least give you a shot... there are certainly some diehards out there still though.

Some do. Mostly academic places. You'll still be able to find work after an AOA residency, and you'll still be able to work in major cities. You'll just likely be working out of local community hospitals opposed to the major university hopitals. Not all university hospitals discrimate against AOA trained DOs. Pay is, in general, significantly lower in academics... if you didn't know.
