I know that retakes are "Averaged out" in the calculation of your AMCAS GPA. But what does this mean exactly?

I'm not sure but am fairly confident that GPA is calculated by Total Attempted Credit Hours divided by Total Quality points.

My question is if you retake a class say Organic chemistry and get a A the second time around and got a C the first time around. Does AMCAS count the retake in your Attempted Credit Hours? Or are the two grades simply averaged resulting in a B=3.0 but the Attempted Credit Hours remain the same.

I can't seem to find out how to log into my 2007 AMCAS, although I am almost positive it counts as additional Attempted Credit Hours. If I can find my printed app I will respond again tomorrow if nobody has answered.

The are averaged out in the overall GPA, I believe. They would count as two seprate grades.

In fact, I am positive they are listed as separate grades. During my wayward freshman year (way back in 2000-2001) I earned a D in some lame music appreciation class. I took the exact same course from the exact same guy the second semester and skated my way to an A. On the plane on the way to my second interview I had my printed AMCAS app and was looking over it so I would be ready to answer questions. I hi-lighted both grades with a sick orange hi-lighter and it still haunts me.

Its okay, I'm in the same boat too (Got a D in Drama out of all courses) but its a big problem when you get a D/F in a key class like Chemistry.

I don't think a D in a elective will kill your chances like getting a D in a BCPM course.

Another way to think about it is that AMCAS sees them as totally separate, independent classes. They both add to the credit hours, and they both have separate grades. This is why retaking a course won't help you at all in the admissions process, unles you are retaking a D or F in a pre-req where you need to show the adcom that you can at least get a C or better (and if you got a D/F, you'd better get a B or an A!).

No it won't... I was accepted to one of my top choices this year and have scored off 2 waitlists, too
