Hi Guys,

Could someone please evaluate my academic record and tell me if I have a good chance in getting into a DO school, thanks!

MCAT: VR: 6, PS: 12, BS: 12, WS: P.
GPA: 3.89
Research Exp, clinical (M.D.) + volunteering Exp.

I took my MCAT second time in hope that I would improve on my VR section so I can apply to MD school with better chances, however, as you can see not much improvement was done lol. I am ESL so VR has always been an issue despite much time and efforts I spent on it. After pondering on my score I decided that I would be better off to apply for DO this year, plus that I do have genuine interest in Osteopathic Med.

Since my VR is still so low I am worrying if it is going to affect my qualification, also will it be too late for me to submit my AACOMAS application in two weeks? I am now scrambling to get it ready lol since I spent previous few months doing the AMCAS application. I do not have any DO shadowing experience (I work for a MD instead), is it going to have any detrimental effect? I know some schools prefer to have a LOR from DO, but are you going to be disqualified right of the bat if you don't have one?

Any feedback is appreciated, thank you!

I think you've got a shot for sure. Being ESL your verbal score will be super easy to explain. I just got accepted to D.O. with a 34M MCAT. English is my first language and I got a M on the writing portion! Good luck, and no I don't think it is too late to submit the AACOMAS app.

All DO schools do not require a DO letter. Some accept an MD letter and some require no physician letter at all. It's not too late to acquire such a letter if some of the schools you really want to get into need one. Here is the list of which school is which: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=10677&d=1217108730

You are by no means a shoe-in for DO schools with a VS of 6, but I do think the ESL will help you there. And it is not relatively speaking as "late" in the DO application cycle for DO as it is for MD, so don't worry about that.

Thank you guys for the valuable advice and kind words, you really lift my morale there 🙂. I also have a question specific for catalystik about the excellent Excel link in your post, how did you acquire such information? Did you just go to each single school's website and research about their LOR policy?

This link came from the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum. Someone in the Pre-Med Osteopathic Forum probably did the research. The kudos go to that person.
