Hey y'all, sorry to post another one of these threads, but I'm feeling a bit lost at the moment. I'm pretty unfamiliar with most of the DO schools and I'm not sure where I should apply given my stats. Any help y'all could give me would be much appreciated! Here's my app in a nutshell:

  • cGPA: 3.71 sGPA: 3.56 (both of these were calculated using AMCAS, so I'd expect the sGPA to be a bit lower for AACOMAS; I aced all of my math classes and I was lead to believe that math classes are not used in calculating sGPA for DO schools)
  • MCAT: 29 (PS: 11 V 10 BS 8)
  • 150 hours+ of shadowing physicians. Was able to shadow physicians in over a dozen different specialties
  • 4 non-medical mission trips, 2 overseas
  • 1.5 years volunteering with an inner city outreach program
  • 2 years volunteering as a tutor for underprivileged kids
  • Freshman orientation leader
  • Member of 3 honor societies
  • Collaborative research during college, presented project during our university's symposium day
  • Currently work as a research assistant in the college of medicine at my state university. Have been working here for almost a year.
I am a TN resident.

Try CCOM, AZCOM, WesternU, Touro-CA, ATSU-SOMA, ATSU-KCOM, KCU-COM, RVU-COM, PCOM, NSU-COM, DMUCOM, VCOM-VC.

Hopefully you're applying to your instate MD's as well! Might as well take a shot at Vandy, you never know!

I don't know how many DOs you're applying for- you have a great shot at any that doesn't have regional or IS bias
Or how close near home you care to stay

LMU-DeBeusk (TN)
Campbell (NC)
Vcom- Carolinas, auburn
Tourno-NY
Pikeville (KY)

Agreed with all of alteredscale's recs (obviously!) as well

You pretty much have a shot wherever you want to apply. Do you have any specifics in mind when it comes to what you want from a school? (region, missions, etc.)

As others have said, you have a good chance of pretty much any DO school, and honestly probably a good chance for some MD schools as well.

For DO in a position like yours it really comes down to geography. Any preferences?

Thanks for the insight/encouragement guys! As far as geographical preferences go, I was trying to pursue schools that are in warmer climates. My wife really does not like cold weather, so I am trying to accommodate her wishes as best as I can 🙂 But besides that, I'm just looking for schools that have good reputations and have solid histories with match rates. I'm unsure of what specialty I want to go into, but I'm looking into pediatrics, FM, emergency medicine, and a few others.

AZCOM and Western for sure then. LECOM has a campus in Florida.
