Chances for DO?

State: Virginia resident

cGPA: 3.63, sGPA: 3.54
MCAT: 28 (PS: 11, Verbal: 7, BS: 10)

Volunteer:
Clinical volunteer activities: 1) EMT at rescue squad (1000+ hrs) 2) Recreational therapy volunteer (30 hrs) 3) Clinical research at hospital (200 hrs)

-Nonclinical volunteer activities: 1) tutoring students (30 hrs), 2) teaching assistant for college chemistry class (400 hrs), 3) College class discussion facilitator (100 hrs) 4) Performed scientific demonstrations with students (10 hrs) 5) volunteer at a Charity house (0.5 year),

Physician shadowing: 1) 200 hours of MD shadowing. I have a MD letter. 2) 10 hours of DO shadowing. I do not have a recommendation letter from a DO.

Research experience: 1) undergraduate research at college (1.5 yr), 2) one NIH summer internship, 3) 2 year of NIH Postbac award research experience 4) Presented three different research posters at five conferences.

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me come up with a list of schools I should apply. A range of schools with safety to reach schools would be great.

Also, a lot of schools require a DO letter, which I do not have. Should I try to get a DO letter and send it ASAP, or just apply to schools that do not require a DO letter/accept MD letter?

Thank you!

As for my research, it seems that most schools are requiring a letter from a DO. If they do not, they want an MD or DO letter. In at least one school, I know they said that you may be accepted without a physician letter, but they will require a DO letter within 30 days of acceptance.

Most DO schools I know will take MD or DO, I would focus on applying to those and in the meantime shadowing a DO and requesting a letter if you feel it's appropriate. But you can definitely get into a school without one. A few friends I know got into Western COMP with only an MD letter. You have solid stats and ECs, you'll get a lot of love this cycle.

You're fine for ANY DO program, including mine. Let's start with VCOM and then:

PCOM
VCOM-SC
PCOM-GA
MUCOM
Any of the three Touros
Both Westerns
CCOM
DMU
KCUMB
PacNW
NYCOM
Both FL schools
WVCOM
LECOM

With a 28 MCAT, even VCU and EVMS might be doable.

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me come up with a list of schools I should apply. A range of schools with safety to reach schools would be great.

You can apply and update once you get the DO LOR for schools like LECOM. keep in mind that it's a longer cycle, and so you don't have to apply ASAP.
