Hey all,

I am just posting to get an idea of what DO schools I should be applying to for this next cycle. Since filling out the application starts May 1st, I figured best to get started now. Suggestions are much appreciated.

GPA
uGrad sGPA (Biochemistry) 3.26 (with retakes in place), ugrad cGPA: 3.3?
Graduate GPA( Pharmacology) : 3.86 w/ 4.00 last semester

MCAT: 30 (Balanced)

EC's:

Research
undergrad (100 hrs)
graduate (4000+ hrs)

Volunteering
Hospital (300-400 hours)… still on going
Alzhiemer's Association (45-50 hrs)… still on going

Shadowing
~30 hours (multiple PCP, Surgeon, PEDES, multiple ER…)
have necessary DO letter.

Graduate level tutoring
~15 hours ( tutored PhD students in graduate pharmacology)

You need to add a few more new schools to the list just to broaden your chances (unless you don't see yourself attending any of those schools). Other than that, your list and stats look solid (maybe a bit low on the extracurriculars but that's debatable).

I for one would almost be tempted to accuse you of trolling with a comment like "low ec's". Especially since the 300-400 hrs of hospital volunteering was done in the last year during graduate school.
I also have a year working at a factory as a quality control chemist (45 hrs a week). Which ones are the new DO schools?

ACOM (Alabama) could be a great addition to your list as it seems to have the potential to be a great program. Newer DO school.

If you are contented with your ECs, then that's okay. Based on what I've seen with other applicants, many have diverse experience beyond hospital volunteering, research and shadowing. Some hold leadership positions in student organisations, others excel in their hobbies, be it sports, arts, etc. And there are those who volunteer in non-clinical settings, engage in community services to promote awareness for a cause, etc. Your ECs are classic cookie-cutter type that most pre-meds have. The only thing that would make you stand out is if you have any significant research experience, i.e. publications, posters, presentations.

You should consult the AACOM College Information Booklet (pdf available online) to check for schools that only hold provisional accreditation or accredited very recently. ACOM, CUSOM, MU-COM, WCUCOM are some of those.

I wouldn't add any of the newer schools if I were you. I think you have a very good shot at all programs. I would add Nova (NSU) and Rowan SOM.

I agree, that 30 MCAT will open doors. The "stat heavy" DO schools seem to focus more on high MCAT than high GPA, which would give you a great chance. Apply to as many schools as you like and can afford.

It's a good list. PacNW has a regional bias, I believe. Suggest adding KCOM and MUCOM to the list.

I second the addition of KCOM. Their average MCAT is 27 (according to the interview handout). Having that high GradGPA should help. It's great that you have a broad shadowing experience (many types of docs) as during my interview that is one thing that they seemed to wish I had. What type of hospital volunteering do you do? Does it involve patient contact? To what extent?

I volunteer at the ER and the Front Desk I did 4 hrs a week of each (8 hrs total)… I can smell them. As of now also I do the non clinical volunteering(alzhiemer's association), so I only do 4 hours at the hospital weekly. I do also have 1 poster presentation under my belt and mentoring undergrads in research(not that I feel that I am hurting for Ec's, but just things I forgot). Hopefully, I will have 1 publication a few months on dopamine as it pertains to drug abuse if all goes well.

Smelling patients is very important in clinical experiences...I shadowed in the ER and it was one of the most memorable experiences for me. I'd 0say you're set on EC's and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Good luck to you!

You should consider adding DMU and MSU-COM (although I've heard the out of state tuition is incredibly high). My impression of DMU is that they value high MCAT scores and Primary Care shadowing. Your tutoring and mentoring experiences go well with their ideology as well. They are not very into research and pride themselves on being an educationally centered program.
