Do schools inform you if an interview is for a wait-list spot?

Hey all I heard another student bring this up today so I wanted to get some clarification. First of all is it even a thing that schools give interviews for wait-list spots even when they already have a number of students wait-listed?

And secondly, would a school actually not disclose whether an interview was for an open seat or a wait-list spot? I find something wrong with the idea of convincing a student to pay for a trip across the country and attend an interview that unbeknownst to them cannot have the end result of an actual acceptance.

Yes it is a thing. Generally, it is the newer schools who practice this, due to the fact that individuals hold seats at these schools with the hope that they will get into a more established school instead.

For your second question, I'm not absolutely sure, but I would say some do notify you and others may not. Ethically speaking, the school should disclose what you're getting into. However it is a seller's market, so "it is what it is" definitely applies here.

they will normally tell you. Also, don't be afraid to ask the admissions office or whoever you are communicating with.

Definitely ask if you are interviewing for a wait list spot. Last year around this time, Campbell was interviewing prospects for their wait list and they did not inform them of the fact until they actually showed up for an interview.

Depends on the school. During my last application cycle, One school didn't say anything (only learned from SDN) and one school was upfront on their email. So you will need to contact them to make sure.
