Do schools know everwhere I applied to?
Started by edkNARF
i think they do. you know that one page summary report of your application that aadsas sends you to review/correct your answers to application questions...well, i could have sworn that at my columbia interview, the interviewer was holding that same summary report. and that report lists the codes of all the schools to which you have applied. i'm sure dental schools are very familiar with those codes (afterall, they're not that hard to break, NYU for NYU and COL for Columbia...) now, theoretically, aadsas could print the summary report without that particular information when sending to the schools, but I highly doubt that they would put in that effort. besides, i saw the top right corner of the report as the interviewer was holding it, and i'm pretty sure that those codes were indeed there.
Schools do NOT know where else you applied to, unless you tell them. I've done interviews and seen the information that AADSAS sends to schools. I haven't done any interviews yet this year, so unless it changed this year (or I've forgotten something), it is still the same.
I am applying to 18 dental schools. Will that make dental schools think less highly of my application because I am applying to so many? Or will that look good that I want it that much? Also, will it make a school think I dont want it that much if I am applying to 17 others. Do I have to list all 18? 😕

dunno. my interviews were for the class entering in 2002. perhaps things have changed, but i'm 99% sure i saw that summary report with the codes of the schools I applied to. Gavin, perhaps your school doesn't disclose all of the applicants' info to you. Afterall, it seems that this would be somewhat unethical being that these students would be in school with you. I know I wouldn't want upperclassmen knowing all the contents of my application. Schools must maintain some degree of confidentiality for their applicants.
edkNARF said:Yes, but does anyone know for sure if the schools where else we have applied. Please include a solid reason for your answer, not "I think so..."
um...I gave a solid reason. seeing the summary report in the hands of the interviewer is pretty convincing I'd say. Again, I'm 99% sure that's what he was holding. take that for what it's worth...

I do see your point, but I've also seen every piece of paper that AADSAS sends to schools. The summary sheet sent to schools, although it looks similar to the one applicants receive, is NOT the same sheet.
I see the plot thickens...
Gavin, have you seen the form that others on the form are claiming has the schools we applied to? Are you sure they are not listed?
Has anybody been on an interview where the interviewer gave them an explicit reason to believe that they knew exactly which schools they had applied to?

Gavin is right. During my interview, the interviewer was sitting close enough that I could see my whole file. I happened to glance at my AADSAS application and instead of listing all of the schools I applied to (like it does on the pink app you get from AADSAS) it only listed the name of their school. Also, one of the questions he asked during my interview was 'how many schools are you applying to?' Why would he ask if it was already in my app?

Yes, the form looks EXACTLY like the candidate copy that is sent out, but there are NO other schools listed.
Listing the other schools wouldn't be at all ethical, IMHO.

Thanks, accidental.
even if the interviewer had a list of schools you applied too, why would it matter? The interview game is a two way street. not only do you have to sell yourself, but the interviewer has to sell the school and its faculty to you too. If I was an interviewer and I noticed that you applied to a couple good schools and you were a good canadate, I would want to make you feel as good as possible, so that when that decision comes to decide where you want to go to school, that you made your decision to accept so and so school based on that you had a really great interview.
I can already see the arguments mounting against me. 😱

Right on, right on. Nice points.

I disagree with your belief that arguments will be mounting against you! I think you make excellent points.
Way to get the information straight from the horses mouth MrBenny, nice work!
Hi,
ok. so lets assume they dont know as AADSAS says..should i not put what other schools I am applying to on my secondaries. a couple of schools ask that. I am applying to 18 schools? will that look bad to some schools? Does it show that I am not confident that I will get in, (which is true, not cuz of my GPA but just because..and I havent taken the DAT yet)?
Or will it have the opposite effect? Like if schools see that I am applying to Harvard, UConn, UOP etc , will that make them think that I must be something good so they will want me more? What do you think? Would you list all 18 schools?

As someone stated up above... it shouldn't matter much weather they see it or not... but lets try and evaluate how the ADCOMM would view a large list of schools on your application as... 18 schools? wow!... shat load of money invested in just applications... hmmm looks like a person that really wants to get into dental school...if you ask me.... applying to many schools can only look as a positive thing... dental school is very competitive and schools know this... like a wise man one said.... throw one stone at a lake ...you might make a splash... throw a handful of stones at a lake... you will make a splash!

I thought the point of throwing stones was to skipp them, so yah you want the least amount splash 😀 am I right.
But bookaging brings up a great point. Just shows your motivation and commitment to get into dental school.

Which doesn't benefit the schools at all, and makes them rather shady, in my opinion.

Just curious which schools are doing the sharing thing?
