I know that WVSOM requires a DO letter before you're file is complete. Most just prefer a DO letter over an MD letter I believe.
I also know that most state schools have an in-state preference, such as OU-HCOM and MSU-COM. I think WVSOM has an IS preference, but they still take a huge amount of OOS students.
I'm not talking about schools that prefer a DO letter, I'm talking about schools that require one.
I thought most, if not all, DO schools are private...correct me if I'm wrong. That being said, Private schools generally don't really have a preference for IS/OOS?

Most are private, however there are some state schools- Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Ohio University and West Virginia SOM are the ones I know of for sure. And at WVSOM, you MUST have a DO letter or you will not be complete. That's the only one I know of for sure. Also, several of the private schools have a regional bias versus an instate preference- UNE-COM (which may also be a public state school) wants students from New England states, Edward Via wants students from Appalachia, etc. Hope that helps answer your question somewhat
