DO schools that require USMLE

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To my knowledge, none. You're likely to hear "comlex = usmle" at most other schools and unfortunately even encounter admin who advise against taking usmle exams.

As an aside, some rumblings of removing the USMLE requirement at RVU.

RVU still has the requirement, it was my understanding that two more schools started to require it. I think the future (5-6 years) is that USMLE step 2 ck and COMLEX will go pass/fail and there will be specialty exams administered by academies (ex American Academy of Ophthalmology) that medical students can take.

Began with the class of 2022. Step 1 is mandatory. Given it's going to P/F in a couple of years, I suspect step 2 will be mandatory for the class of 2024

Wait, so the NBME wins even more because of this. All DO students pursuing competitive fields will now have to take both steps to have a chance, right?

Well, it'll depend on the residency....but I can tell you the majority of EM residencies are looking for Step 1. Maybe some of the old AOA residencies will accept level 1 only....but the allopathic ones have been pretty vocal about wanting Step 1.....our school admin has heard their concerns and just decided to make Step 1 mandatory....which allows them to put the cost of Step 1 into school costs so we can get that extra $600 in loans to cover it.

A lot of EM residencies place more priority on Step 2 than Step 1 because Step 2 is more clinical based. It just depends on the program. Regardless, anyone who is a DO student should take both exams to be more competitive for residency.

Just take it if you want to get in ANYWHERE not restricted to D.Os only. If you do well in med school you will be fine. If you take it and do poorly, then your medical school sucked or you didn't do well. It usually reflects nearly where you are--so, if you were an average med student in a large class, you will also do average on that exam. It is going to pass/fail soon too--so just TAKE IT. you will be glad you did. It opens more doors that if you avoid it--as most think that is due to fear of failure. Just my 2 cents😉
