Hey guys, just got my MCAT in today and I got a 23. So that coupled with my 3.2 cum/science GPA I'm thinking I should look into a good SMP. My problem is I'm having trouble finding osteopathic ones, does anyone know of any good osteopathic SMPs???

lecom is your best bet. 14k tuition. rumor has it that a 23 mcat and a 3.0 in the program gets you into lecom. time is running out so you better hurry before seats get filled up. however, I still think you should study for the rest of the summer and retake.

good luck!

Can one apply to the smp as well as its DO program at the same time?

I don't think so. I think that if you apply for the DO program, and are rejected, you can roll over to the SMP. I'm not 100% tho.

Thanks guys! Awesome advice Ill look into it!

TUCOM-NV, and PCOM are two that come to mind.

You're probably fine right now for some of the DO programs (but not mine).

I always love Goro's responses. TUCOM-NV, TUCOM and Touro-NY all have SMPs that usually mean entry into the DO program with a 3.5 GPA. LECOM's is probably the cheapest. I have heard CCOM and MSU-COM have ones too.

Personally, if you have the money, I'd apply broadly to DO programs, and then if nothing develops, I'd apply to the SMPs a bit later (January-ish). Its not unheard of for people in your situation to get in outright, if the rest of your app is very good. In the meantime, I'd work on an MCAT retake and possibly course replacements, if theycould significantly improve your sGPA.

You don't need an smp. Waste of money. Just retake a couple of science courses and study your ass off for an mcat retake. You will be golden.

He will have a chance with just MCAT retake, but will still be far from golden

I'm actually retaking a couple classes this summer which if I get As I should have 3.25 CGPA and a 3.3 SGPA. I'm retaking the MCAT 8/22. Is that going to be too late to apply??? Or should I apply now and let my application update? I don't want to be screened by schools for my MCAT but I don't want to apply late either. Thanks for all the responses this is incredibly helpful!

At very least I would suggest applying to one school where you won't be screened out right away, like LECOM or LMU-DCOM (they put people who don't meet or are close to their cutoffs on hold). That way you get verified and won't be delayed any more than September (when your MCAT comes in). It is closer to normal or kind of late, but not very late. I applied later than you will, but I also got waitlisted at most places.

Personally, I would apply to all schools whose cutoffs you're above now, and then add the rest after your app updates. Either way is fine though.

Obviously it would be better if you take the MCAT sooner, but its much more important that you do well and show improvement then anything else.
