I think the title pretty much explains it all.

I was wondering this because, from what i have heard from my orthodontist is that specialty programs usually want to see a history of perfection, so it would only make sense if they require a great undergrad gpa or maybe even DAT score?

It sounds kinda crazy but do you guys know if people that have had great board scores and great gpas in dental school not get in cause they didnt have a great undergrad history?

I know it is a premature question since I just got accepted to a dental school but I really would just like to increase my knowledge in this matter. Thanks in advance for your time.

Not a premature question. I was wondering the same thing.

This is from USC Ortho Admissions:
"Applicants must also submit GRE scores and undergraduate transcripts"

However, I know UCSF don't require it. I don't know about other schools though.

I hope it won't hurt you as long as you have high class rank in dental school along with high board scores.

I guess it's like applying to dental school as an undergraduate. It does not matter which undergrad you attended and what your high school gpa was.

6 year OMFS programs are notorious for looking at undergrad grades (The medical school at least).

They are notorious for it, but I don't think it happens quite as often as people assume. I'm kind of like the person you described above (Good boards, rank in dental school, spotty undergrad history) and I was surprised by some of the medical school that didn't snub me.

So my recommendation? Yeah, some programs will look at undergrad GPA but you can never really know which, and in general it's not going to matter very much.

I have spoke to a couple of deans at my interviews about this and they said it will most likely happen more frequently once the boards go P/F. Especially with P/F schools.

Harvard asked me for my High School Transripts😱

Mostly 6 year ( and some 4 yr) OMFS programs care about ur undergrad records; Emory has set a minimum undergrad gpa of 3.5 for OMFS applicants ( regardless of graduate or post-bac gpa) ; UCSF and Harvard care A LOT about it. Regarding Ortho, I have absolutely no idea what they care about since I'm not interested.

As the old saying goes: If at first you don't succeed try try again**

**Disclaimer - If you do indeed try try again your past attempts may, and likely will, haunt you until the grave

I don't think I will be going into ortho or OMFS, but what about other specialties (ie: pedo). Do they care about my undergrad + graduate (MS) grades?

Pedo (and probably most other specialties) don't care about it at all. When I interviewed applicants it wasn't even on the radar.

OMFS 6 year programs probably do to see if you can withstand the rigors of medical school (which most students enter into right after undergrad).
