DO specialties

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
radiation oncology is the only residency not offered by AOA, but they can go ACGME, so effectively, no. but a DO also effectively has no chance to go into a ACGME radiation oncology residency.

1. If I remember correctly, there are no AOA pathology residencies.

2. We should thank schools like (insert the name of schools who have been around for 60-70+ years & still don't have a diverse & well-developed OPTI). These schools don't care about the osteopathic profession. This is clear in the lack of opportunities they provide to their students by not developing a diverse OPTI.

FYI The best part about owning such a school is that you will always have zealous supporters who will defend your school for providing a top-notch education, and will ridicule any one who points out your insincerity to the osteopathic profession manifested in your under-developed OPTI.

Are there ANY specialities that a DO physician CANNOT do but that an MD physician can?

If you work hard enough, you can do anything....I remember the day when I read about an AZCOM graduate who walked into the doors of Mayo as a Radiation Oncology resident. 🙂

Well, I wouldn't say zero chance. Five D.O.s did matched PGY-2 RadOnc spots last year. But very, very difficult. RadOnc has a very heavy focus on research, which...frankly, is the opposite of most osteopathic schools.

you are right, there are no pathology residencies either.

but seriously. stop with the "not developed OPTI means schools don't care." That is false and you are now just trying to get everyone on your team. it is annoying. there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that the OPTI bull needed to be brought up in this thread.

true. when I said "effectively" i meant it is very hard. RadOnc is very research focused, but it is also very small, so people know people. It is definitely possible.

Oh right...if a school has an under-developed OPTI (& no affiliated hospitals) and "farms out" its students to whichever regional medical center is willing to take those students either voluntarily or for a nominal fee...then yes...you are right, that act is the highest form of sincerity towards the osteopathic students as well as the osteopathic profession that I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing.

You have seriously started to make me dread opening any new thread lol. I'm going to start a thread about my grandmother's sore left toe and see if you can somehow incorporate the same thought you post in every single thread into it.

Is it Touro-NY you're about to matriculate at? Just thought you might be interested in their mission:
"Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to preparing students to become outstanding osteopathic physicians who uphold the values, philosophy and practice of Osteopathic Medicine. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine places special emphasis on teaching and learning in the areas of primary care, the holistic approach to the patient. Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to identify and recruit students who have specific interest in practicing in underserved communities, such as Harlem. The College advances the Osteopathic profession and serves the students and society by providing a firm educational foundation, encouragement of research and scholarly activity, and participation in community service."

While your ranting goes on about schools not providing enough opportunities, it's pretty clear that you think DO schools need to provide more competitive opportunities for their own students. They are NOT doing their students a disservice by providing fewer residencies, or less competitive residencies, nor are they doing a disservice to the students by "farming them out" to community hospitals. They are fulfilling their intended mission. What is really doing everyone a disservice is your inability to realize that no wants to read your posts, as they've ceased to benefit anyone anymore.

SNORE! Seriously, you seem to be missing the fact that nobody cares about the OPTI crap that you are spewing. Sure, if you want to post about it in school comparison threads, by all means do it. While unlikely, maybe someone will buy it. But can you please keep it out of threads that don't need it. We are bored with it.

lol....it's funny how you extrapolate your own opinion to mean the opinion of the rest of the world....

Pediatrics is not a "competitive" residency in the MD world. Why are there way more family med spots then there are pediatrics?

Well I mean SERIOUSLY, this is getting old. Get a hobby or something, geez, ya know?

I mean you even made fun of me for being an LMU cheerleader and we can still get along....I'm so easy to get along with, especially in the fake Internet world, but good LORD I'm spent on this one. I give up lol

I'm gonna throw out a wild guess....because there's a NEED.

lol...you don't represent the entire world.
No, but he does represent probably almost every person that posts in the pre-osteopathic forums and for now, that's close enough to the whole world.

ahhhhh more OPTI propaganda!!!!!!

No one can....it's like herpes, the gift that won't stop giving...

So you guys are ok with schools who don't sponsor strong OPTIs?

Imagine if everyone did that....imagine if every school only sponsored 6 FP programs....would you guys be ok with that?

Grace, all schools...MD and DO have a primary care mission...that doesn't mean that they will only sponsor FP programs, does it?

board scores and match lists...

That's what it's all about. 👍

All the OPTI talk isn't even bothering me that much... it's the part where you say that osteopathic schools don't care about you because they don't have a developed OPTI. It's infecting every thread here, and is quite annoying.

Sorry for annoying you all. That was certainly not my goal.

So, please educate me, what should I say?
What does it mean if a school is not willing to sponsor a diverse OPTI?

If every school only sponsored the same OPTI, then this topic wouldn't have been brought up to begin with. So yes, I'd be okay with it. 😎

dude you have posted nothing but things referring to "OPTI" in virtually every one of your posts.... sing a different song man

i pray for whoever lands in your gross lab group next year, your narrow mindedness in person is certain to be more draining than it is here on SDN...

Every school does NOT need to have a mile long list of residencies in their OPTI. Honestly. As long as we have enough residencies open in the country to support the number of graduating students, that is all that matters. People like yourself can continue to choose a school based on the programs available, and that's fine. It just isn't the deal breaker on whether or not a school has any value to offer, nor is it an immediate indicator that the school doesn't care about its students.

And not every school has a specific mission to fill the need for primary care physicians in areas of need....prime example, my state school's mission statement:
"MISSION

It is the mission of the Indiana University School of Medicine to advance health in the State of Indiana and beyond by promoting innovation and excellence in education, research and patient care.

VISION

The Indiana University School of Medicine will be one of the premier medical schools in the nation based on our education, scientific investigation, and health care delivery by 2005."

I can guarantee this is not the only instance, but my time would be better spent preparing for my exams.

Thanks for the personal attacks/insults, they definitely show me how broad-minded & tolerant you are.

Nah, ain't no thang but a chicken wang my friend. I can handle comments, criticism, etc and even some heated responses....as long as there's a reasonable and respectful content and tone to the post. What I can't handle is tunnel vision 🙂

I'm afraid you may not be the best judge of who is and isn't broad-minded lol. Try again.

extremely broad-minded and tolerant to a point, but seeing you rant in virtually every thread about "OPTI" begins to get old for me and many other people...

attacking? insulting? if we are talking feelings here... maybe you should start ranking the schools based on counseling services offered instead of all this OPTI stuff?

Well, at least we have you..the most broad minded person in Tennessee to enlighten us....

This is awesome.

I'm glad the state I reside in has relevance. Oh wait. No, we still haven't gotten back into the realm of relevant yet. Maybe eventually though.

I disagree with all of you.

Sadly, my opinion is different than yours.

I hold schools responsible (those schools who've been around for 100ish years) for providing a diverse & well-developed OPTI. Even if it has nothing to do with the well-being of their students.

They owe it to the osteopathic profession.

I am terrified when I imagine a DO profession in which MSU-COM, NYCOM, PCOM, and OU-HCOM had done exactly what DMU & KCUMB did with respect to their OPTI.

Also, it's interesting to note that 7-8 pre-med's and 1 OMS can claim to represent the "rest of the world", and single me out.

And now that we've heard your same opinion yet again....why don't you answer the question that is likely burning within all of us. Why in the WORLD are you entering osteopathic medicine? If you are so concerned with such issues, why not go into an allopathic program where you you don't find all but 10% of the schools disappointing?

Hmm, now, if only we totaled the numbers and statuses of people in the 4,581 other threads you started all this talk on....might not sound quite as silly then.

I don't owe you the answer to this question. That is a personal question, not related to the osteopathic profession. I have personal reasons.

Your reason for attending osteopathic medical school this fall is not related to the osteopathic profession. Fascinating lol.

My reason is personal. Here, on this forum, I am discussing things related to the osteopathic profession. Not here to discuss my personal decisions & the personal reasons behind those personal decisions. 🙄

Speaking of what's being discussed (or not being discussed)...

Terms of Service on SDN tell posters to try to stay on topic and not cross post the same comments in multiple forums. What does it tkae for Mods to classify all this as disruptive to the forums??

Either way....it's been real. Good luck this fall...it's a wild ride.

btw nowhere have I stated explicitly that I want specialty...for all you know, I might be hell-bent on going into Family Medicine.
Just because I am finding a fault, and talking about it, doesn't mean (logically) that it is directly effecting me, does it?

It's interesting to see how you, grace, have concluded that I want specialty. 🙄

Indeed. So do tell, what is it you are interested in specializing in? Or is that too personal to share as well? You're right, I made an assumption about you. Here's another: I'm sure you have done the same in all these threads. Either way, you've implied that you find the presence of competitive residency program types available to DOs via AOA....it was only reasonable to think you were interested.

That is quite personal. But just wanted to show you how your reasoning, in concluding that I want specialty, was flawed & based on an assumption. 🙄

I suppoese I'd be more concerned if I were the only one using flawed logic based on assumptions.

Maybe I should, so I can keep seeing the eye rolling smiley face lol.

And on that note....

I'm done. Only 27 posts too late.

You have already been educated and corrected about Nova vs KCUMB in regards to OPTI vs actually caring about students. What else do you need to make you STFU? You provide no evidence that OPTIs choose their own students over students from another school, AND you've been shut down by the fact that KCUMB, which has a smaller OPTI than NOVA, provides more help to someone who has to scramble than NOVA does. A direct example that contradicts your stance provided by someone who's been through the process.

Like I said before, if you want to pick your school based on OPTIs alone, go for it. But saying that schools are failing the osteopathic profession by not providing OPTIs for their students and they generally don't care about their students is a load of horse sh~t. Those schools will still fill their classes because people want to be physicians, and don't care about OPTI this and that. You're fighting a futile battle, one that has been dragged across this entire forum. We used to have great discussions here and behaved civilized until you started contaminating every thread will OPTI OPTI OPTI. You even posted that you smiled when you read about an AZCOM student walking through the doors at Mayo Clinic as a Rad Onc. Did that student rely on his OPTI? Lol no. He worked his ass off and got to where he wanted to be.

Also, you must be a sad loner to have no attachments and base your decision to attend medical school on objective information like OPTIs. Yea it's a personal attack. Cry about it.
