Next year I'll be applying to pathology and I'll be doing the couples match with my girlfriend. My girlfriend and I are trying to come up with a residency list, but I have no idea what programs I would be competitive for, so I was hoping for some advice with this topic.

About me:
-3rd yr DO student
-Step 1 in the 250's
-top 10% of class
-I'm pretty average otherwise, I guess. I have a little research and some ECs but nothing too exciting

you'll likely be able to get interviews at most non-uber research type programs, as long as the PD doesn't have an anti-DO bias. step 1 score in the 250s will open most doors.

Thanks. I know you cannot predict the future, but would you mind listing a few (like 2 or 3), so I can see what types of programs you are talking about.

anything outside of the really big names, but not a community program or malignant, falls under middle tier. so most state universities.

I wouldn't feel like you're out of the running for a so-called 'big name' program, though I agree some may have research or DO biases -- which I don't -think- is what it perhaps used to be. Apply early to places that interest the two of you and let the cards fall where they may, IMO.

I second this opion that your scores should at least get you interviews. There are truly some PD and faculty who might have an unjustified bias against the DO degree but I think that your scores and hopefully solid interviews will prevail. I have trained with plenty of DO's who had no problems getting into the residency and fellowships of your choice. You should be fine
