I am a DO student who didn't take the USMLE so how do I figure out which FM/IM residencies are DO friendly? Should I just shot gun all of them? I don't know how many places people usually apply to for SOAP so I'm kind of freaking out.

Sorry to hear that. I would encourage you to contact your Dean's office ASAP for that sort of advice. Best of luck in the SOAP.

There are 6 AOA programs but they haven't updated it since Feb 8th so not sure how many are actually left. Is it against the rules to contact them now?

DO who didn't match here as well. Ideas on transitional year and trying to get in somewhere next year?

Any tips for fellow DOs? I'm applying allo and skipping the DO match for a local spot. Not the best grades (206 USMLE and 530 COMLEX)... But I'm told my clinical skills and personality are held in high regard. Doesn't mean much but hopefully should help with my home town audition coming up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hard to give good advice to people without really seeing the files. That is the job of the Deans. In general if you are a AMG, then it is better to either 1) postpone graduation and do a masters, research yr, etc during medical school, 2) scramble for one of the open psych slots, or 3) get a transitional position (better in an Allopathic program if a DO since an osteopathic internship does not count for allopathic psych programs) for next year and then apply through the match next year for either a PGY1 or 2 position.

Hey thank you, totally understandable. I'll send you a message later today after clinic!

Absolutely ridiculous your deans aren't available until 2:30pm. Ours were like "If you're SOAP-ing, come in immediately and we'll get you sorted out"

My school never got back to me so I just applied to 45 programs, mostly FM, through the SOAP and accepted an offer at a local FM residency which was my top choice of the 8 FM programs that contacted me. I am still incredibly sad about not getting into Psychiatry, but very pleased about getting a residency. At least I will be able to still see a lot of psych and have the option to pursue an addiction fellowship.

I was considering scrambling for the 2 remaining unfilled DO psych programs after the SOAP, but decided against it since it seemed too risky for me.

Awesome, congrats! FM has a lot of psych anyways, so sounds like you've definitely got quite a bit of psych in your future 🙂
