Hi everyone,

I am a third-year DO student at a med school in PA. I am planning on applying only to family medicine MD programs. The reason for this is that I plan to do a residency in Manhattan, NY and they have no family medicine DO programs there. I know that the DO match is in Feb and the MD match is in March. I also know that in a state like NY, DOs need not do a "rotating internship" year. My question is: what are the application forms other than ERAS that I DO NOT have to fill our since I am a DO student applying only to MD programs? Has any DO on here done something similar and care to comment or provide insight?

Thanks very much!

i am applying to mostly MD peds programs. i dont think its a problem as long as you are a qualified for the position of residency you are applying to. good luck!

This is probably less true in Family Medicine than in other specialties, but I would still be cognizant. There will likely be programs you come across that do not accept the COMLEX in lieu of the USMLE.

The main difference is which match you will register for. For MD programs, you register through the NRMP. For osteo programs, it is through NMS. I am in a similar position in that I am only applying to MD IM programs this year and I did not bother registering with NMS ($60 as I recall), because I was not planning on interviewing or ranking any osteo programs.

Some people will register with NMS just to have the ability to scramble in some sort of nightmare scenario where they don't match even if they do not apply to any osteo programs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply! I think I will register with NMS just for a possible scramble scenario. Thanks for pointing it out!
